Hello all

have an 07 coupe auto with 70 odd thousand miles on the clock.

i get this noise like a wooping noise when i am doing about 30 and i put my foot down and the auto box downshifts.

I have a youtube video, it happens at about 2 seconds and 5 seconds.

http://youtu.be/h43l5FbnE40

anyone know what it could be ? Bmw has replaced the cyclinder head under warranty but still happens, less so but still happens.

many thanks

Welsh

ok if the noise is unkown. Can you here the noise in the youtube video? BMW are saying they are cannot identify a noise. Did drive their technicaian around and he acknowkledged the issue. Now i have to take a morning off work to drive them around again :-)

cheers

I have a Z4 2008 coupe3.0SI, automatic and about 60000 miles and have the exact same problem. It does the same noise when I floor it and it changes gear. It seems on and off. My independent mechanic has not found the cause yet. What cylinder head have you changed ? The noise seems to be coming from the center in between the rear wheels, where the drive shaft connects to differential.

Hi there sorry for the delay.

Bmw dealers said it was the cylinder head so replaced it under warranty. Made no difference to the noise. Mechanic friend listened to it and said it doesn't sound mechanical.
Here's a YouTube vid, see if it's the same issue as yours ?

Need to turn the volume up

Welsh1, no I had listened to your video and this is exactly the same noise and it happens like you when I accelerate full throttle. The sound happens when I drive and if I floor the pedal pretty fast, it occurs when the automatic transmission downshifts. My noise like I said earlier comes from the back of the car in between the wheels where the differential is connected to drive shaft. So for mine it cannot be the engine or transmission as they are in the front. I had my mechanic look at it and he tightened all the torsion bars in the back of the car where the differential is but the noise is still there.

Still inquiring on my end, it can be inside the differential or something related to the wheel's traction system, still don't know.

Ok first he said it was an air in take noise then he changed his kind. He is going to speak to some clutch expert as he thinks it might be the clutch. Taking it in next week so will update again. Will be the third week they have had it. But this fella seemed decent so hopefully get it sorted

Will let ya know

Ok I thought your Coupe was automatic, if this is the case it should have a torque converter and no clutch. ??? Am I missing something ?

It is an auto mate, this is what the guy said. Getting his terminology wrong, was just quoting him.
It's in another garage at the min as the water pump has given up !

where abouts you from welsh ?

did the pump go around the 70k mark ? did it just start overheating or ?

Live in London at the mo. Yeh the water pump went at 68000
Drove it for 3 hours stopped, drive again for 10 mins and on this drive the temp gauge was flipping to the max and beeped. So stopped ASAP . Then it went back to normal, drove 2 miles to destination and it went red once or twice. Then left the car went to drive it 2 hours later and the coolant light was on, lifted the bonnet and water there was spray on underside of bonnet. Technician came out the pump didn't fail it was intermittent. Might have been a ticking noise but can't remember. Also the fans kicked in when the pump wasn't pumping

And as the temp gauge was so up and down I thought it must be a sensor error. So glad I had the warranty still or might have driven it somewhere....

So yeh warning to people if u temp Gauge acts erratically might be ur pump

And gyro jut had the diagnosis from the garage. Apparently they were dealing in with bmw Germany again. They are now flushing out the gear box. They will do this twice at certain temperatures then replace the fluid with new and improved stuff (more additives). So fingers crossed. Assume if this doesn't fix it then the gearbox is done for? Hope that's a warranty item

Thanks Welsh for the update.

Talked to my mechanic yesterday to take an appointment. (he used to work for BMW in France before moving to Canada and start his own shop). I explained the noise and the problem, mine is more frequent when my transmission kicks down. He seems aware of the issue and mentioned that some Z4 had transmissions made by GM. Not sure yet which one I have, he will be able to tell when he looks at it. I told him I wanted to get transmission oil and differential oil changed and he agreed that would be a good start. I hope this will fix your problem and mine.

I travel quite a bit and spend a lot of time in London, I do see a lot more coupes in Europe compare to North America. I saw the first one here yesterday in my neighborhood after two years of ownership. The beer in England tastes much better for some reason.

Hi mate just a quickie, the noise seems to have gone fingers crossed. Getting invoice soon, will post exactly what they did. Flushed out the gearbox is what I was told..

Great news,

Yes I am really interested in what they did. I have an appointment on Wednesday to have it looked at.

Cheers
