3.0i E85 Multiple Codes on Carly

Hi All,

I purchased a 3.0i 2005 E85 a couple of weeks ago. Seems to be Ok but I purchased a Carly for coding and to check codes etc. To my surprise i noticed that Carly was throwing quite a number of codes which are worrying me. These are below;

ENGINE CODES

0027C3
CDKTOENS - error oil level sensor / CDKTOENS - error oil condition sensor / CDKTOENS - thermal oil level sensor / DMTL leakage detection / CDKTOENS - oil level sensor / Index 179 inj / CDKTOENS - signal oil level sensor (toens)

002747
CDKMD05 - misfire detection cylinder 6 in firing order / CDKMD05 - misfire recognition Cyl. / Misfiring cylinder 4 / Lambda probe reference current diagnostic Vcat bank 2 / Lambda probe referenzwiderstandsdiag. Vcat bank 2 / Lambda probe reference resistance diagnosis before kat bank 2 / CDKMD05 - misfire detection cylinder 9 / CDKMD05 - misfire detection Cyl.3

00279C
CDKETS - final stage thermostat map cooling / BSD bus error (general) / CDKKFT - thermostat electrically / Index 140 inj / Thermostat map cooling: control / Secondary air system 2 / CDKETS - control thermostat map cooling

00C31F
Camshaft sensor outlet signal

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER CODES

000011
Tog / Acoustic transducer no / Tank sensor 2 short circuit to ground or battery voltage / Oelstands sensor defective

000020
Ignition (KL.15) on but ignition (KL.R) off / Air bag

AUXILLARY HEATING CODES

0000DA
This fault results from a generic communication issue in the ECU: Additional heater / Zusatzheizung (Internal GR92)

CENTRAL INFO DISPLAY CODES

00A46B
EEPROM checksum error

I am hoping all are related to one issue and that i don't have multiple problems here!

Please can anyone offer some advice. Ive trawled the net so much and can't find much info other than the usual sparks / coils, breather hose cracks, MAF etc. Just wondered if any mechanically minded people have a clue if this is multiple issues or just something simple? Obviously hoping the later!

Thanks!

Damon

Just a quick check, have you cleared the codes, gone for a short drive and then re-scanned to determine which codes are actually persistent?

You can get old codes that haven't been cleared or codes that have worked themselves out (misfire fixed due to oil/spark plug change for example).

Carly does a good job of saying which are critical and which aren’t

I’d start with the engine ones and literally pop them into google- you’ll find lots of previous forum entries from all across the bmw owners spectrum which can give you a steer.

Word of warning is don’t head straight off down roads replacing lots of parts- that gets expensive and may not fix the issue- ask on here if anyone has previous experience

Hi Dan. Yes, I have cleared the codes and they do keep coming back unfortunately..

Thanks,

Damon

Ah shame that.

I haven't personally had any of those specific codes and agree whole-heartedly with what [ref]bigwinn[/ref] said above about going down the rabbit hole with replacing parts.

Having said that, all of the fault codes are electronic/sensor based. Do you know how old your battery is? If not, get a multimeter on it to see if its running out of juice. I have read on multiple occasions that a dying battery can cause a ton of strange fault codes.

Also weird thing is that the check engine light isn't on with any of them?! Would that usually come on with these codes?

I haven't checked the battery but did have the battery disconnected the other day for 15mins after updating satnav firmware. Could this have anything to do with it?

I don't think disconnecting the battery would cause that, and anyway, they would reset if it did.
However, as every second post on this forum suggests, a less than perfect battery can cause some very weird fault codes to crop up.
As stated, as they are all sensors, which tend to use very small voltages, it is possible that an aging battery could be your issue.
Unless you are confident that it is 100% ok, then maybe invest in a new one first?
Whilst it has been pointed out that this is fault finding with a very blunt instrument, look on it as stopping to wipe your feet before you enter the rabbit's home.

Damon goes without saying if you are close to Lincoln I’ll gladly help out

I’ve got an 04 3.0 which we could use to swap out coils etc

Happy to help

Thanks for your help everyone. I checked the battery on my 'Battery checker' this afternoon. All checked out OK so don't think its the battery. Can a battery check device still say that the battery is OK and still cause problems? I can't believe that all of those sensors could have gone at once and not put an Engine Check light on too?!

Thanks for the offer Bigwinn but I am unfortunately Swindon way which is a bit of a treck!

The car drives fine and no CEL. I have cleared the codes, went out for a drive and checked again, they keep coming back. I hope someone can give me an insight as I'm at a loss here. As you all say - they seem to all be sensors. Is it really that possible that they have all blown at the same time without even showing a CEL? Don't know what to do other than sporadically change parts.... Don't really want to do that but I can't see another way around this other than trial and error? I haven't seen anyone with the same issue, especially the same set of issues. If i take it to an Indy not sure what they will do other than change all sensors? Wonder whether its an ECU / wiring problem.... Hope not.

No worries mate!

Get a few things banged in google to see what gets thrown up

My battery was showing a full charge on the meter but car made really wierd noises and wouldnt start. It seems voltage was ok but amps were way down. Replaced battery and car fired first turn of the key. If you dont know age of battery I would get a new one from Tanya batteries, exceptionally good price compared to elsewhere and delivery the next day. Might not cure those problems but there is a good chance it will.

Ive changed battery for a Varta. No luck, Still getting same engine codes! :x

I think this may be a short in the wiring somewhere or a ground problem? It can't be that all of these sensors have gone at the same time....

Any ideas anyone? I wouldn't know where to start looking!

Thanks.

That's annoying. Sorry we pushed you to the expense of a new battery, but it kind of had to be eliminated first.
Are you actually getting any symptoms or warning lights or is this just hidden away for Carly to find?
Just looked and it's 50 miles from Swindon to Hook, to visit Ross at RBM.
In the absence of any other assistance that may well be your best bet?

No problem re battery. didn't know how old it was anyway to be fair. It was an RAC Varta Premium so not too bad.

The codes are just hidden away in Carly. No warning lights but to be fair the car does feel a little underpowered but I am used to a 330D with Stage 1 remap!

I don't know anything about Ross at RBM but will take a look. Thanks,
