3.0 roadster top speed

Sorry, perhaps I didn't explain properly, its not that the car wouldn't go over that speed, its just it didn't do it as serenely as I had expected.
In comparison I also have an ST Mondeo, I find that is much more confidence inspiring at high speed.
by the way my Z is a 04 with 50000mls, running on 18" Bridgestone run flats, and the engine runs lovely, so don't think there are any poor performance issues

i had the ghiaX eqivalent of the ST (The older ST not the ST220) they were ok at speed but i suspect that was much to do with weight. Was a little nervy at 150 (or whatever it was flat out).

if you want scary try a westfield.. above 100 the areo is so poor that it lifts the front :D. max speed in that is only 130 tho

I've got say as I approached 120mph, I was not very impressed with the experience.
For one it was quite noisy, roof was up by the way.
But the whole car felt quite flighty, leaving me holding the wheel very tightly.

I have caught myself doing 120 with the roof down and listening to loud music while not even trying in a 2.0. It certainly didn't need two hands. I think your car needs looking at.

I do think this is down to run flats as my Z only feels light about the 130 mark, even then it still feels under control

Noisy yes, but understandable as its a fabric roof and there is no insulation in the doors (prefacelift)

With 19's mine is noisy at 70 mph even

But yeah i would say its down to the runflats

Hi,

I drove to Germany recently, at 180-190kmh (110-120mph) I felt the car to be quite unstable as well.
But as I kept pushing on, at 200-210kmh (130mph) it became suddenly much more stable and I went up tu 230 kmh (it is my "physical" limit for now, I dont feel confortable to go faster on the Autobahn)

A friend told me it might be the wheel alignements, as Bing says. I have inspection 2 in a few days, I will check if that changes anything.

I My current 3.0Si has not been v-maxed yet, but I've seen 130 - got there plenty fast enough, and felt peachy .

The reason you didn't see more than 130 is because you were obviously looking where you were going, can assure you your black beauty goes much much faster than that...

Did you have the 'Sport' button pressed? I found that having Sport mode engaged on mine inspired a lot more confidence, because the steering was weighted up more with the result that it didn't seem as "twitchy".

Looks like I went about it all the wrong way, rolling on from 6th gear and not having sport button pressed, I promise I'll do better next time !

Didn't think the sport button did anything to the e85/86 steering or is this a 3.0 and below thing??

Yes it was a 3 litre and below thing. I had a 3-litre Roadster before the Z4MC.

I did a few runs near top speed while in germany, 6th should not be used for hard acceleration if there is still some left in 5th before redline? I agree with you on stability... it was terrible however I know exactly what caused this. Old runflat tyres which get even harder with age it seems and some worn bushings. At 145mph every slight problem is amplified and I am 100% the tyres were the main issue. The front runflats last ages compared to the rears after a couple of years i am pretty sure they get harder as the rubber has been heat cycled too much, I dont know about everyone else but I got a few years out of my fronts and there was still loads of tread left when I got rid of them as I initially thought the vibration may have been a slight bent rim. The car is as solid as a rock on a fresh set of ZE912's with the bushings done no vibration or wandering at all. Doing those kind of speeds though without runflats is more of a risk IMO, if a blow out were to occur I would want it to happen with run flats rather than non run flats as the tyre would not deform sending you off into the bushes?? !

If you can connect 2 pipes to draw any gastric acid out of the cabin into some storage tanks, then have a valve fitted so that, at the flick of a switch the gastric acid mixed with the air/fuel mixture I reckon 185 would be possibe.

Depends how flatulent you and your partner are :tumbleweed:

...and if you add some Halfods go faster striples, 200mph will be possible

if you did that tho you would negate the speed advantage due to the weight of ll the other tat you buy from there.

My 2003 3.0 whizzes up to 120+ very quickly. You need to use the revs and the gears ,not try to grind top speed out from 6th gear only. On a recent holiday abroad, I zoomed it up to 150mph before the missus realised and it was pretty stable and easy to achieve, ( on decent tarmac), also max'd it out late one night on a dual carriageway ( speedo just over the 155 mark, didn't spend too much time looking, was busy looking whereI was going :D . Not sure I'd try it regularly on the UK's crappy tarmac as our roads are too uneven and bumpy, which will make the car feel a bit unstable. Remember, you are driving a sports car with hard suspension and wide grippy tyres, you'll feel every imperfection in the roadsurface. My company car ( Rav4) feels regularly more stable at a ton than my Z4 on UK roads,so, don't blame the car, it's our roads.
