2x Bad Z4 experiences, rogue cars?

hi
a Z4 was top of my list until i drove it
the roof rattled and it thumped everyware, the test drive was very short and i took it back dissapointed.
i thought i would give it another go 6 months later and bingo! same again
both cars were SE 2.5 models early 53 and 04 plates

BUT a drove a Boxter today and God it was flat so i am thinking of giving the Z4 another go
or am i wasting my tine?

run flats will cause the ride to be hard and bumpy, ditch them for some normal tyres. As for the roof I would say a as rule they do not rattle, but as a roadster there will be more squeaks and rattle than a normal car.

Potential troll alert :P

Try a few more of each, and a later Z4 maybe. However, the Z4 does have quite a harsh ride which can be helped by replacing the runflats with non-runflats, but it'll always be a hard ride. The Boxster I think is a little softer, more refined I think althought I've never owned one so I cannot compare. I would expect the Boxster to be more costly to buy and to run (Porsche servicing costs).

My recommendation would be to definately test some more Z4's and try to stretch to the 3.0Si (265bhp)- a great engine especially with a few miles under it's belt.

Both are great cars but of course we here are biased towards the Z4 :) rather than the Porsche. IMO, BMW blew away the first generation Boxster with the 3.0Si which if I remmeber correctly was/is as fast as the first generation Boxster S? (or very close)....and of course then there are the ///M's which I think actually offer a slightly nicer ride (and definatey less tramlining due to not having runflats) than the runflat shod non-M Z4's.

Only you can decide, but try a few more of each and especially a 3.0SI and even an ///M if your budget will allow.

i had no such problem with my Roadster.

if you need a reason as to why you want a Z4, then you need to listen to this

Remember if it walks like a dug and makes noise like a dug it properly is a dug.     Mate better drive a newer car like a 08 or 09 or even take a new one for a test drive .... then tell us what you think

If you drive an old piece of junk that many other people may have abused what do you expect? Just saying ,,,

If you do go hunting for a car take Alan's check list along best read it first (taken or highjacked from one of Alan's posts) ... http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=13484&p=201080&hilit=+check#p201080

Pacemaker100, firstly welcome to the forum. 'Am I wasting my time...?' - strange question to ask on a Forum where 99.9% of the members are Z4 owners! As already mentioned ditching the RFTs in favour of quality tyres makes a significant difference not only in the ride but the handling. Bear in mind that you have been looking at 6/7 year old cars and it depends on previous owners as to how they have either been cherrished or used and abused. The design of the Zed places you low down between the axles with a rear bias therefore the ride will be harsher than a saloon - that's just part of a sports car design. I'm now into the 6th year of ownership of my Zed (as original owner) and it's rattle free and through regular maintenance and servicing drives like the day I bought it. Good luck in whatever you buy.

thanks guys
not setting out to slag off zeds, already own a new 3series.
i will give it another go as they really appeal to me, prob a 3.0
as its a toy i dont wont to spend over 10k so a 2006 model is out
also looking at a boxter/slk/s2000
to answer am earlier remark the boxter i tried was a 2.5 and it was gutless
cheers

A couple of years ago I drove a 987 back-to-back with a Z4 Coupe, and preferred the Z4. Boxster just seemed a bit sterile.

Roof rattled?? That's a strange one, but use on z4 s as they are on run flat tyres the ride could be described as crashy. The odd rattle like the glove box is common, but these are small flaws in the overall experience, yes there are better cars out there with better quality, but get it on a good road with the sun shining and give it some stick and you forget about all the flaws. I have a 2.5 se from 2003, and love it.

I will say with mine when the roof is down I have no rattles at all.

Mine is now seven years old and drives as new. No squeaks or rattles, and my last car was a lexus LS so i know what refinement is.
