Mk II MR2 - mid-engined, tunable and exciting handling (if you don't mind swapping ends occasionally when it rains) :P

OR

You can stretch to an E46 330d or even a E3530d if you spent a few hundred less on the van - they're fairly fast stock, and with a remap will give much more torque whilst remaining economical...

How about a near-300bhp Lexus Soarer with the same twin turbo engine and suspension as the Mk IV Supra:

MX5 will give you more smiles per mile at the prices your talking - and should be reliable. Had a Mk2 1.8 and loved it - brilliant fun.

:driving:

So i've narrowed it down to MX5 mk2, Z3, MR2 mk3

I can't afford to get backi into a Z4 but i liked the 2 seater softop idea especially as prices are going down approaching winter.

Took a MR2 out last night, I really liked it, felt so light and nimble and nippy, its not fast but was great fun to drive, the equivilent Z3 is about 1.5 sec slower to 60 and nearly 250kgs heavier. I'm taking out an Mx5 tonight but tbh i think i prefer the look of the Mr2 - 'a little gay' rather than the Mx5 which i would put as 'fairly gay'
The Mk II MR2 isn't at all gay (unlike the Mk III) and the turbo charged version is good for a 5 second 0-60 time. If you really want to see the sky, some are targas too.
