£260 for oil service and brake fluid

:o Is this the price I should expect to pay for an oil service? This is my first //M, and first service, so I don't know what to compare it to.

Any info/advice is much appreciated

Paid £240 for an oil service 2 weeks ago. Quote for brake fluid change was £80, so yours seems a good deal.

W H A T?

Oil Service at BMW MD c £169.33 for a 2007 Z4M Aug 08
Brake Fluid at BMW MD £48 for a 2007 Z4M Sep 08

together it would have been £217. You have been quoted 'not happy'.

Moral of the story - shop around starting with Cotswold, Woodmans (Blackpool) or Batemans (Lakes - take a w/e break and get it done Fri afternoon or Sat morning while you wait). To get it even cheaper provide the oil yourself.

My Oil service invoice was ex vat -
Labour 48.60
Oil 64.35 TWS (direct from Opie it would cost about £42 ex vat)
Oil filter 7.80
air con filter 23.36

all up 144.11

vat 25.22

£169.33 IIRC Cotswold quote about the same.

I have just paid £160 for Oil Service and £85 for Brake Fluid but the £160 was a special offer and is normally £240

Thanks for the info...think i'll definitely be shopping around. I've been quoted £150 by an independent for an oil service. What would I lose if went independent? Does it invalidate warranty? I might try using this quote as a price match for the main dealers

The prices I've stated are BMW Main Dealers, stamp and computer record included of course. Resale value protected. Just tell them you want them to match - they will. If they don't go elsewhere!

Just had a look at my bill from Bowker Blackburn, 27/4/09

Oil = £78.38
Oil Filter = £8.83
Pollen Filter = £30.26
Labour = £59

Then there is £26.09 for the "Routine Maintenace Check" (I think this is where they plug the computer in and check for any fault codes).
And a £6 environmental charge (for disposal of the oil, etc).

Total £208.56

Plus VAT = £239.84

I paid £15 for the environmental charge. Must remember to bring a container next time so I can dispose of the oil myself at the council tip next door for free !

There's your rip off right there! RMC is a specific, customer requested, defined set of checks that isn't part of the BMW service schedule. Its a service invented to give the nervous peace of mind between services. A total waste of time and money - fundamentally its level checks.

To combine it with an oil service is a piss take - you've been charged twice for the same thing! And that is how BMW MD's and Bowker in particular get a bad name. Caveat Emptor. Download or ask for the service schedule and content paperwork, only buy that and shop around if you need to and based on Bowkers invoice you need to! Try Bowkers or my favourite Batemans in South Lakes - there you can walk round the back and see your car being worked on. Nice people too.

Thanks for the advice guys. Phoned round quite a few places, best quote I could get was £240. That's for oil service and brake fluid.

Ian - I tried the dealers you mentioned but they were quoting similar prices, you must get mates rates. Think i'm just going to bite the dust.

Cheers

Just for comparison:

6 qts Castrol 10w60 @$10.13US ea
1 oil filter $9.68
Tax $5.26

Total $72.87

Taking my time to drain oil and clean out old oil from oil filter holder: 1/2 hour.
*******************************************************************************************************
3 bottles of BMW Brake fluid @ $3.91 plus tax $0.90

Total $12.63

Remove wheels for brake bleed procedure and remove/bleed old fluid: 1 hour

Over here, that 1.5hours of labour would equate to about £180, plus the £55 ($85) for parts and you're not far off the prices from the dealer. Although I would expect the dealer to be able to do the whole job in less than 30 minutes.
