This might help, although not sure how accurate the info is

Hello mate,

It was me that started the other thread cause I've been looking into this. I thought the dIfference between the engines may be a three stage intake manifold (which is the difference between the US 3.0 and 3.0si) however after some further research (and actually bothering to look under my bonnet) this isn't the case. The engines in the 2.5i and 2.5si are identical, the only changes are software based. It may not be as simple as just a remap though. I'm having this looked into at the minute so I'll keep this thread updated.

I am sure i read on zpost the difference between the US spec 3.0 and 3.0si was due to cams in addition to the manifold?

I cant personally see how the 2.5i which has 170 somthing bhp vs the si which is 215 (so 40 bhp) is purely down to a remap.

I'm pretty sure the 2.5i is 192bhp, it's the 2.2 that's 170

I am talking about the facelift here... the pre 2.5 def has more power then the facelift one.

EDIT... According to parkers (if that can be trusted)http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/summary.aspx?model=74

2.2 is 167
Pre 2.5i is 194
post 2.5i is 174
2.5si is 214.

Nop the only difference between the US 3.0 and 3.0si is the intake manifold. The US 325i and 330i are both a 3.0 N52, with the extra power coming from the intake manifold and appropriate map on the 330i. The three stage intake manifold is standard on both the UK 2.5i and 2.5si though, if you check on RealOEM every engine component is identical right down to the cams, ECU etc, so the 2.5i is simply detuned somehow via software. BMW did this with the original new mini, the one and cooper had identical engines, a remap on the one brought it up to cooper power levels.

If your wanting to get to 2.5si power levels it may not be a straightforward remap. The changes which make up the extra power may be encrypted into the ECU, however it may be as simple as uploading the 2.5si map parameters for vanos, valvetronic etc to the 2.5i ECU. Basically it needs someone who knows what they're doing to attempt it.

Thanks for your reply frazerbottomley, being of the female species would anyone know where the best place to start looking ? I persume this would be a specialist garage and not go to a BMW garage ! :? Any suggestions would be apprieciated
