20i Brief Loud Start

All, my 20i is starting very loudly after being driven and fully warmed up then left for 2-10 hours and restarted. When it starts the revs shoot up to about 2200 RPM and there is a loud boom from the exhaust. The revs come straight back down to a normal idle level but there is a noticeably louder than normal rumbling and rattling from the exhaust until it has been driven a little.

It's quite hard to demonstrate to a dealer, I don't know any other way of making it happen and I don't know what is causing it.

Has anybody else had this or got any opinions?

Mine is the same. It's got a growly burble on startup from cold (a bit like it's blowing) then it calms down when warm.

Just collecting my E89 on Saturday.

All the test drives I have had the dealer has gone to great lengths to explain that the noise on startup is normal for the 2.0i and yes it does go away, shame as I liked the growl.

A normal start on my car it revs up to 1250 RPM and is not loud at all. This loud start is up to 2250, so quite a bit louder... it only happens after it has been driven for a while then sat around. Usually doesn't do it from a fully cold start...

Not sure we are talking about the same thing?

This is what I am talking about, it often goes to 2250RPM. Normal is around 1000 rpm for me. Listen to the exhaust boom. Any ideas?

I think the boom of the exhaust is hard to hear on the video and it often goes up to 2250 RPM, which is loud! Do you have a 20i sdrive or something bigger and louder like a 35is? If the latter then I'm guessing your car is very loud every time you start it so me posting a video like this might seem quite bizarre.

I had the 23i sdrive before and that started very quietly every time (<1000RPM).

20i and yeh mine is louder at start up than my old 23i....perfectly normal me thinks!

Ok good to know. The thing that makes me think it isn't normal is that it only does this occasionally. Not on every start.
