Hi everyone,

Just looking for some advice.

My brother recently had all of the oil leave the engine on his 520d as he was driving. BMW have confirmed that this has damaged the engine and means the car will need a new one to run. Before the fault the car was on around 92,000 motorway miles and had always been serviced by BMW. I understand that it had a high spec including heated wheel and harman kardon so it would seem a shame to scrap it, but having not had this happen before he is not sure what to do.

Is it best to try and sell it as is and if so what asking price would seem fair? Alternatively, has anyone had any experience having an indie replace an engine and does anyone have someone they would recommend (ideally in central Scotland or the north of England) and an idea of what cost is reasonable for the work?

Many thanks in advance!

If its been serviced from new and on time by a BMW Dealership, they can/may offer a 'goodwill' contribution, even if not under warranty.
Ask them about the green initiative to keep cars on the road, rather than scrap them. I believe it is a BMW contribution to swing the balance, when its a financial 50/50 whether to repair or scrap.

Hi 5,

They've confirmed they won't be offering any goodwill due to the age and mileage, but I will ask them about the green initiative.

Thanks for the suggestion!
