2012 BMW 3 Series Unveiled

I really like it, similar to the 5 series it will grow on you. BMW are miles ahead of the comp in terms of design, as a designer myself I appreciate all the attention to detail and I feel like this will be a great car, not only the ultimate driving machine but a lot of other car companies will take inspiration from it. Like most new BMWs it will look much better in person than in photographs. The short drops on the nose and tail look fantastic in my opinion, I also love the wedge style front takes design elements from the m1. Also the horizontal lines on the back making the car look wider and the vents taking inspiration from classic sports cars. Really great decisions in my opinion.

Only big downside for me is this bullsh*t segregation between the models, it looks cheap and tacky. The design of the lifestyle choices are poor in my opinion especially with the brand identity of BMW it just doesn't fit. Feels more ford than BMW but time will tell. I also don't like the fact it takes a few interior design cues from the bottom of the range 1 series, with the red stitching to determine the 'sport model'. If you are spending 10K+ more for a 3 over a 1 then you expect a more focused and quality look to the interior, less is more and that is too much.

The coupe or 4 series as autocar thinks it will be designated, will bring some more dynamics as the coupe is much more driven toward the sports car feel of the model. The M3 will come along and redefine the models yet again. Just wait until the M division gets hold of it, makes more of the 'sport' pack'. The release models always look a bit tame, just give it time! I guarantee the M sport will look a treat, I can see some sick splitter esk front and rears, with some very nice aero skirts. Will look the business! :) The M kit completely changed the look and feel of the E90 models, introduced with the 320SI before going mainstream. I had one and loved looking at it, miss the look of it only sold it 2 weeks ago :(

Just my two cents, but to appreciate good design you need to understand its form and function also a brief history lesson will show what a well designed car it is. It is very much for the masses and probably thats why the Z crowd arnt too impressed because lets be fair the Z is not an ordinary car and thats why we are here.

Well if that's in the mind of a designer, I guess were all stuffed, my kettle is well designed but it's also ugly, so ugly here we come.

maybe the customer will have the last say with a downturn in orders.

I think it looks great, at the front at least. The middle is plain saloon, couldn't tell if it was the curent gen or new gen if the front was covered up. The back end could leave you guessing if it's a 3 or 5.

Definitely like the grill/headlight area, hints of the i8 concept and hopefully showing a more striking design language for the future.

Herminator - I knew i recognised the front of my BMW sneeze from somewhere! BMW used your avatar as inspiration

I just saw one of these in Soper's workshop on 61 plate, looks better in flesh than the photos I think. no idea what engine it had, as still was partially camouflaged :P

I don't find this as bad as a awful lot of recent offerings and would seriously consider one in the future when someone else has taken the sting out of the depreceation especially if as rumoured we finally get the AWD version in UK.

especially if you compare it to the new 1 series, it is a great looker

I like it a lot - lets face it, it's in the exec saloon class so it will be relatively "safe" design wise. In this market large volume sales are critical to the manufacturer so they need a design that will have broad appeal across the widest possible audience.

It gets stunning reviews as well so far, blows the Audi A4 out of the water. Although to be fair they managed that with the previous model which tells you all you need to know about the Audi. The A4 is no looker either !!!

NNNNNNope! had another look and tried to understand its form and function but still think its a hugely uninspiring design, but then again, like %99.9 of the car buying fraternity im not a designer.

Saw one of these on the road today -although it was a brief glimpse it looked very smart

The 320d Sport has been road tested in Autocar in this weeks issue (out today). It got 5 stars. To put that into perspective the only cars to receive 5-stars in recent years are the Ferrari 458 Italia, Ferrari 599GTB and Porsche 997 GT3.

It's larger and lighter than its predecessor and apparently has more internal room than an Audi A4.

They averaged 56.8mpg, 0-62 in 7.7s and summarised thus

The new 3-series isn't flawless, mainly because it's still not the most refined premium-brand car in its class. But, viewed with the proper perspective, it's certainly 'brilliant, unsurpassed, all but flawless' - our irreducible qualification for a maximum score. The 3-series' dynamic virtuosity has always stood out, but this new model's superior sporting handling and performance, grown-up ride, exceptional economy and enhanced practicality demand ultimate recognition. The car is a triumphant testament to BMW's driver ethos and engineering prowess, and now stands head and shoulders above its competition, towering clearer of the pack than any other class-leading car we can think of

High praise indeed....

I seen it in the adverts and thought it looked amazing, I seen it in the shopping centre and being honest... I think the new Mondeo looks better!

If you want a refined mile muncher you buy the C Class in Elegance spec. In all honesty if you go for the Sport spec like I did you loose a fair bit of ride comfort if you start to go with 18" wheels (standard are 18s but you can have 17s as a no cost option - which is what mine has) and you had just as well stick with BMW.
