I really like it, similar to the 5 series it will grow on you. BMW are miles ahead of the comp in terms of design, as a designer myself I appreciate all the attention to detail and I feel like this will be a great car, not only the ultimate driving machine but a lot of other car companies will take inspiration from it. Like most new BMWs it will look much better in person than in photographs. The short drops on the nose and tail look fantastic in my opinion, I also love the wedge style front takes design elements from the m1. Also the horizontal lines on the back making the car look wider and the vents taking inspiration from classic sports cars. Really great decisions in my opinion.
Only big downside for me is this bullsh*t segregation between the models, it looks cheap and tacky. The design of the lifestyle choices are poor in my opinion especially with the brand identity of BMW it just doesn't fit. Feels more ford than BMW but time will tell. I also don't like the fact it takes a few interior design cues from the bottom of the range 1 series, with the red stitching to determine the 'sport model'. If you are spending 10K+ more for a 3 over a 1 then you expect a more focused and quality look to the interior, less is more and that is too much.
The coupe or 4 series as autocar thinks it will be designated, will bring some more dynamics as the coupe is much more driven toward the sports car feel of the model. The M3 will come along and redefine the models yet again. Just wait until the M division gets hold of it, makes more of the 'sport' pack'. The release models always look a bit tame, just give it time! I guarantee the M sport will look a treat, I can see some sick splitter esk front and rears, with some very nice aero skirts. Will look the business!
The M kit completely changed the look and feel of the E90 models, introduced with the 320SI before going mainstream. I had one and loved looking at it, miss the look of it only sold it 2 weeks ago
Just my two cents, but to appreciate good design you need to understand its form and function also a brief history lesson will show what a well designed car it is. It is very much for the masses and probably thats why the Z crowd arnt too impressed because lets be fair the Z is not an ordinary car and thats why we are here.
