BMW’s next-generation Z4 sports car has been photographed quite often in various stages of its development. These latest shots show a test car caught in the streets of Munich.

The Z4 will replace the current model that has been on the market since 2003, and it will be about the same size. The most significant feature on the new car is that BMW will exchange the canvas top for a retractable steel roof, like that on the Mercedes SLK.

The new Z4 is expected to offer a choice of more powerful engines. Riding on the latest 3-Series chassis, it may use the same range of four- and six-cylinder engines, and for the first time there is talk of additional diesel engines, too. The top of the line version will be the Z4 M.

While the current Z4 is being built in BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the new Z4 will be built in Regensburg, Germany, with production starting in late 2009.

The photos show a computer rendering of how the new Z4 could look without disguise, and three of our latest prototype shots.–Hans G. Lehmann / Hidden Image

Interesting rendering...
JMO, but it looks more main stream & to have less of an enthusiast edge to it.

Where is the antenna supposed to be coming from in the photoshop - the passenger door handle?

think you will find they forgot to erase it from the original shot

It's nice but right now I'd go for a TVR t350c instead.
LOL, the price looks like a bargain these days, and I've always really liked the T350C. But have you ever owned a TVR? It's pretty raw compared to a Z4, really is like an expensive kit car. And the servicing costs a fortune, because there are always a large number of little things wrong with it. And if anything big goes wrong, it's time to surgically remove the wallet.

I always wondered where TVR would be now if Peter Wheeler hadn't refused to use German engines. S54-engined T350 or S62-engined Cerbera -- yes please! If they could've made Wiesmann-style stuff at half the price, I reckon they'd have been on to a winner.
