2009 BMW Z4 sDrive35i

Now it's a 'sports car' and not just a cute convertible?

Seems that it WAS a sports car, and now it's just a cute convertible, from a sports car drivers/road car users pov anyway  (more weight, smaller boot, slower roof, all make it less handy)
I wonder how fast you can go before operating the roof stops. Iirc, the new Audi S4 convertible can go about 25mph!

Interesting to see the 0.3s difference on 0-60 time with rollout or not included. I bet the old 3.0Si is damn close to this new one in performance terms!

Wow, thanks for sharing the link. Good information, and now makes it more difficult for me wanting to trade up, eventually, from my Z3! So many choices!

I like the new car.

But I DID NOT like the video. The commentator called the "older" Z4's: 'Ivy League Miata's" WTF....

I drive a Miata on the track, and you cannot even begin to compare the two cars...

Agreed.

I can't wait until Top Gear TV does a proper review of this new car. They seem to be the only ones who can tell it like it is. All the other editors seem fearful of saying anything too negative, so they end up talking rubbish as mentioned above.

ZERO mph.

Roof will ONLY operate UP/DOWN whilst stationary.

just cause people behind your car can't see the third stop light, during open/close operation....

I'd like to take him around the track in ours and then say it's a cute convertible. Well once I get new brakes.

What is the new Z4's lateral G's on a skidpad?

Being compared to a Miata / MX5 is not a bad thing - it's one of the best handling cars of the last 20 years! I know they are maybe being slightly derrogatory though.

Imagin if Mazda actually made a grown up MX5 - I think it would be pretty cool.

The new mx5 is grown up... grown up and got fat just like the new Z4. Light and nimble seems to be a thing of the past with 2 seater roadsters

I guess I'll eat my own words... Top Gear had some really good things to say about the car. And Clarkson said he'd have one over the previous Z4! :o

...and then it's ass got handed to it when the Nissan 370Z spanked it around the Top Gear Track. :rofl

Nissan 370Z: 1:27.5
BMW Z4 (E89): 1:28.2

Old Z4M roadster: 1:26.0 (on a damp track) :D

Hardly surprising though? M is lighter and more powerful...

And not entirely a fair comparison with the coupe version of the 370Z since that doesn't need the additional bracing and weight the roadster version will probably have ...

ROOF OPENING/CLOSING

Just tried it.....it WILL close whilst you're moving.....I only tried it creeping forward at about 2-3mph.

BUT....in all honesty, I'd prefer to close it whilst stationary, to ensure the lugs (at top of screen) locate securely, if bodywork is shaken as the car moves I wouldn't want them 'banging' about trying to locate themselves.
As for opening & moving...not tried that yet.

Top tip....I store the car in the garage with the roof UP. So for security, to ensure no-one attempts to ( ) open the roof in the garage (disasterville  ) I stow the boot tray in the fwd position.
