Now that's weird, I don't get that with mine. Doesn't matter where I am or on what situ, whenever you put your foot down, the gear drops and off you go...and it's always pulling hard and high.....
+1

in fully manual mode, i.e. not just hitting the gear change button when in 'D', the gearbox never changes up for me. I don't go to the rev limiter so don't know if it will do then.

I've not driven DCT, but my Golf's DSG box was a thing of beauty. In auto it was smooth as anything, kicked down nicely and was relaxed to drive. sport mode is for insane people. Redline shifts all the way. Put it I'm manual though and it only changed if you bounced the rev limiter, or bogged it down so it would stall. Otherwise very very drive able and I am quite interested in a DCT equipped car at some future time.

No, I sold it back to the dealer that sold it to me for a price that was as good as I'd get privately less the few odds and sods that needed doing

I thoroughly recommend the edition 30 or Pirelli version if you can find one.

No - it would not let me do what I wanted and when I wanted it.

Going around roundabouts, I would want to have the car in second to get out of the roundabout, but it would change to 3rd even though I would be in manual mode which left it "dead" when moving off.

My X5 gearbox is more predictable than the E89 was but that gearbox is newer again than the E89.

It is not a manual versus automatic type thing as I have both, just the E89 version was really not for me.

PVR It does take a little while to get your head around the gearbox and its modes, but when you do figure it out, i promise that the E89 35i DCT can make very swift progress across the county side of a comfortable sports car.

I now wait to be flamed by the M/// community :fuelfire:

No flaming - you described it perfect. Swift progress in a comfortable sports car.

I am more for the wanting to feel the car and the road and in control of the gear changes as I feel that the DCT decision of changing gears when I am not expecting it might unbalance the car, or if it causes a kick down, it might just do that in a bend where it could cause problems with the back end. Just to mention again - I only drove the DCT in manual setting as I hoped it would just eliminate the clutch part, but leaving me fully in control of the gear changes but that was not to be so it seems.

The Abarth DCT version I have is doing the same type of things, so I guess it must be me expecting too much from a DCT gear box in manual mode.

yep. DTC is still a system that protects the car and the power train from shocks.

Even in race cars like the aston Martin GT4 and the Ferrari 458 the gearbox (both with flappy paddle) will not select a gear that will cause the rear wheels to lock and thus spear the car off of the track.

rest assured the DTC is no different from wanting to save the driver and car.

I find that the good thing about this sort of automatic box is that it wont let you bounce of the limiter, thus slowing the car down, so if you forget to upshift in manual (my age i suppose) it takes the next gear and continues to propel you down the road unabated!

I should like to see a side by side comparison between and M and the 35is.

EDIT
Just for clarity, i mean a test where either the same driver of drivers of comparable capability drive either car.

Sheesh, tough crowd. The DCT box is a peach I can assure you. We came from an S2000 which really kept you busy maintaining optimum rev range. With the DCT If you want lower gears in a corner you just use the paddles to drop a couple of cogs and It'll stay in the lower gears for the duration of the corner.

The DCT box in the Z works exactly the same way. In manual mode it will only upshift when hitting the limiter, and downshift when in an inappropriate gear for the speed you are doing, or slowing to a stop.
