2008 UK Service Cost

Hi Newbie here, I recently purchased a Z4 3.0i '05 and it is now due an "oil service". I have just been quoted £230 by the local BMW dealer, can anyone advise what the current going rate is for an "Oil Service" by BMW dealer. Thank you!

Sounds expensive

Stratstone advertised 'oil service' at £149 in October BMW car club magazines. Does not specify if inc. or plus VAT.

I assume the price is based upon supply and demand

i think the last time i got a quote for oil service it was £170 from douglas park in hamilton......... bmw garages are quite good at quoting ya so just ring round and ask......

Thank you for your quick replies, this is my first Z4 and infact BMW and only owned it for 6 months, this seems like a great forum!

I've just booked mine in for an oil service and was quoted £180 all inc. thats down on the south coast. If BMW dealers are anthing like Audi ones they prices differ greatly between the regions

The Stratstone advert I referred to above quoted Inspection 1 at £249 and Inspection 2 at £349, so given their quoted figures were way lower than posters mentioned and you have an Alpina I'd wild guess at the £400 and £550 region respectively

Still a 1 minute dealer call could get an accurate figure.

I've just been quoted £250 for an oil service from one dealer :o :o

And £179 from another! they are only about 20 miles apart, wonder why it differs so much?

Are these quotes including the oil?

Do they tend to do it cheaper if you supply your own oil?

Why don't you buy the parts yourself and have it serviced at an independant garage? Lot's of people still think they have to get the service done at an authorised BMW stealer to keep the warranty but you DON'T! Both my Alpina and the 330 have been serviced at Simpson Motorsport since I bought them. It's much cheaper and they know what they're doing!

:hijacked:
Would anybody go with a BMW specialist and not bother with the MDSH if the car is a 2003/4..?

Both mine are serviced by a local garage. Uses genuine BMW parts where required and is a fraction of the stealer price. In fact he does such a good deal that its not worth wasting my time doing it myself.

Think that's what I will do when I find mine..

There's still a lot ot stigman attached to having the car serviced by the dealer though. I guess it will put a lot of potential buyers off if the cars not got the dealer history?

It's strange when you think about it. Most of us have discovered by now that the main dealers are useless but we insist on full main dealer history when we buy a car. Go figure!

I have some buddies in the motor trade and they tell me that a 'full dealer service history' adds no significant value to a car at all. While in the first year or 2 there may be an argument to do it for warranties (and that's not even a legal requirement in the UK any longer)

Test it when you ask for a trade in value. At most they will ask if recently serviced. For a private sale it can give comfort to a potential buyer however a pile of receipts for work done, spares, etc. is of equal value.

in the latter years the massive extra cost of dealer service far outweights any incremental sale value. I recently had a level 3 service done on my X5. Dealer was asking £650. Local guy did it for £200, car collected, valeted and returned. Is my X now worth £450 less, or if I went to BMW to trade would I get book plus £450

I didn't say the stigma was right! Personally I think people would be wary to buy a newish vehicle that had been serviced by a non franchised garaged. Especially on a premium brand car, having it serviced effectively on the cheap, hints of curtting corners.

I'n my exprience the the smaller centres take more pride in their work and the guys I go to know a lot more about the cars than the stealer. As long as the parts are OEM or better I would be quite happy to buy any car of any age with that kind of history. It just means the previous owner doesn't like being conned just like me. I don't think it's a case of doing it on the cheap it's more a case of not being ripped off. Cutting corners is something my dealer tends to do. The little tasks like lubricating linkages and adjusting the handbrake tend to be missed out whereas my garage goes above and beyond the call of duty. It depends how good your garage is and how naive and narrow minded a future purchaser is I suppose.

The warranty is only upheld if the independent's staff have been on the official BMW training courses, the garage is approved and uses genuine BMW parts whilst carrying out the work to the same criteria and standards that BMW dealers have to adhere to when servicing those models, so that's not entirely the same as going to any decent BMW indy, it is quite stricly controlled. I don't like using dealers but for the sake of a few hundred each year it's worth it for resale values, try selling your Z4 onto a dealer with an Indy stamp in the book, any saving will be wiped out immediately and more, personally I just phone around and get the cheapest deal and live wiht it, there are 2 indy's that I know that do a better job than my local dealers but I know in 1-2 years time I need to p/ex the car so just accept it
