tl:dr Is my engine an N52? Are there upgrades for it?

I'm feeling a little down about my car. For some reason I had it in my head that I owned an M54 and that there were a lot of upgrade options. After a little research though it seems the M54 was for the European market in '07 coupes and the N52 was in American. Feel free to set me straight if I'm confused but here are some pics:

Do I have the write engine type now? Any performance upgrades you guys have tried and liked?

Thanks for your time!

Looks like you have an n52 with different engine cover. It is also more powerful to start with then the m54 In the uk the n52 was used in later face lift models and coupes.

Yeap! That is a geniun N52 engine!
But why are you so sad about no room for upgrades? N52 is a beautiful peace of engineering! It can have some issues but still it is a smooth natural aspirated straight six bmw engine!

Yeah, i dont understand what your complaining about? if you had the M54 lump you'd only have (231)bhp and in the N52 lump its (265)bhp? The N series are a lot more advanced and haev the optimum HP squeezed out of them allready?

he complaining that he cannot do any many improvements/mods in the N52 as you can with the m54 = more bhp in than the N52?

Think there have been a few posts about this

yep, very limited upgrade available on N52.

DMS Tuning don't list a chip upgrade for the Z4 3.0si, however they do list one for the 130i which AFAIK is the same engine.
This takes it from 265 bhp to 291bhp.
May be worth giving them a call?

No chance - they also claim a near 30bhp increase on a Z4M/e46 M3 (and at 1500rpm lower :? ), so you wonder why BMW spent £5k making the CSL when they could have simply 'chipped' it

When I looked at getting mine chipped the company I spoke to suggested I might see 5-6 bhp if I was lucky and some improvement on the throttle response. If I changed the exhaust and filter to a Gruppe M and eisenmann I might see 10bhp but for a cost of a lot of money. Decided it wasnt worth it.

If it was so easy to get 30bhp from a chip BMW would have done it, there must be a reason why they didnt

Didn't say I believed it. :P

In the states, Active Autowerkes (AA) and ESS have both come out with tunes for the n52. Nothing kick in the pants feeling but then again, no n/a tune will yield such a result. N52 is a fine motor... just came back from a track day not too long ago and I saw 2 N54's that hit to come back to the paddocks due to overheating.
