2007 3.0si Sport - Which Castrol Edge Oil?

Having recently bought my new coupe privately (knowing it was very soon due for a service - had a full Dekra inspection etc), I had the first stage oil warning light "+1.0L..." pop up within about 5 days so popped down to Halfords.

The manual was less than clear as to which oil to use, other than "the latest recommended..." very helpful... :headbang:

I looked on the forum whilst in shop and saw 5W30 Fully Synthetic Castrol Edge was recommended. Guy in Halfords looked up the details and confirmed this.

So I bought 4 litres thinking maybe the car will drink oil... On reflection I should have only bought 1L but hey.

Now due for service, and would make sense to supply my own oil for service. Asked BMW when booking if for service about this, and I was questioned why I'd want to, I said price and fact I'd got some that would otherwise be sitting around - was fine with that.

My questions are such:

BMW suggested they'd use Castrol SLX - Is this different to Edge? - Not seen it in Halfords...

What is the difference between 0W30 and 5w30 (I think they're both LL04, whatever that means  All I know is it should be LL04  Looked up recommended oil on Castrol Website from my Reg No, and it says 0W30 I've got 5W30 and was thinking of buying more so as to match rather than mixing... 0 with 5

All help and advise to clear up my lack of knowledge wold be greatly appreciated!

P.S. I've seen the list of recommended oils posted a few discussions, but want to make sure I use the best rather than an "OK to use" oil.

As far as I know, both oils are ok. I use Castrol but can't remember if its Edge or SLX

5w-30 seems to be the preferred oil IIRC from previous threads

Thanks Adamski - anyone else got a definitive view?

Looking back at a previous service invoice, they used 0W30, what is the difference netween this and 5W30?
