Hi Z4 Forum
I have a bit of an issue with my 2005 z4 E85 that I could really do with some expert opinion on and I am hoping someone will be able to say, “sure, I know what that is, it’s easy to fix…..”

Had to car for a few weeks, lovely to drive and no problems. Then one morning I get in the car start the engine and the temperature gauge needle goes straight into the red and sits there and the cooling fan comes on.

I got hold of “Car Scanner” OBD-2 and it came up with the P0117 error code pointing to the Engine coolant temperature sensor. So as this is cheap to buy I bought and fitted the sensor in the inlet side of the engine and the sensor in the radiator hose at the front of the engine bay.

I put it back together and bled and burped the coolant started the engine and the iproblem persists, just put key in ignition and turned it on without starting the care and temperature gauge needle immediately goes straight to red and stays there and the coolant fan comes on.

I check the 30mm and 40amp fuses in the DME compartment and they are fine.

So the battery was pretty dull when I bought the car and the winter cold dulled it further so I bought a new battery and fitted that. Problem still persists, but now I have lost the radio too.

I run the car scanner again and the P0117 code is still there and now accompanied by two further codes, 2C71 and 2EE0. Please see attached.

Do I need to reset anything after fitting the battery? It was the same specification as the previous battery.

I have no further clue about what this could be. Anyone have any suggestions on what next?

All ideas gratefully received!

Regards
Adi.

You do not need to reset anything after changing the battery. I would hazard a guess that you have either a shorted wire or corrosion on the temp sensor circuit. Unless one of your new sensors is bad out straight out of the box.
