2.0i owner opinions?

32MPG on a run, overall average since having the car about 29MPG - alot depends on how you drive it!

that's on european gallons :)

I get about 31mpg from my 3.0i in a pretty much ideal mix of hellish traffic, clear motorway cruising and occasional thrashing. Cane it and you'll get less, but I've never had lower than 27mpg.

To chip in on the engine choice; the 2.0i is reasonable but pre-facelift it's only 143PS which I suspect might seem a bit weedy in a car of the size and ability of the Z4. That said, my brothers old 180PS Audi TT seemed as quick and was as fun as my 3.0i is 90% of the time, so you don't have to go to the head of the class to have fun. I'd definately go for a six-cylinder, but not necessarily the top one. (As an aside, the 2.0i also has a big void in the engine bay in front of the block through which you can see all the way down to the undertray, looks like something's missing. Something like, say, two more cylinders!).

When I got mine (2006) there was no price difference between 3.0i and 2.5i of the same age, or a 2.2i about six months younger. Hence I went with the 3.0i which was a good deal in return for only about £75 more on insurance. It's different now; a 2.2i will save you £1k to £1.5k over a 2.5i, which saves a similar margin to a 3.0i. The 2.5i does come with the Sport button, which the 2.2i doesn't, but I'd be tempted by the smaller unit. It's revvy nature suits a BMW Roadster.

Recently been getting around 22mpg since I've only driven it on local roads around town and have a heavy right foot.

Otherwise late 20s (mostly) or early 30s with a mix of roads.

For that matter what are the 2.2's and the 2.5's getting to the mpg? (I will have to go for a pre 2006 on my budget).

mpg shouldnt be a consideration in buying a roadster- drive them and buy the one that makes you feel good!

If fuel and everything else wasn't going through the roof I would! Get a 3.0 and I'm looking at £300 just for tax next year!

One important thing - the gears, how does the gear shift feel on the Z4. I had a 330i (E46) and the gears used to slip in to the wrong gear all the time it was very frustrating - is the Z4 better?

:o no problems with my gearbox :D

Andrew D, you've never managed less than 27 mpg??? YOU WOT :poke: !!!

I think you may need to grab your Z's balls and show it whos boss :driving:

As for the lower engine'd models, sorry i couldn't comment.I knew if there was a larger capacity varient available i would HAVE to have it so didn't even bother driving them. :)

Take em all for a spin

Hehe, I rarely get lower than 34mpg over a tank

I have managed less on single trips though, but even then it's hard to get into the low 20's since I always end up behind traffic at some point.

When I was looking, the 3.0 seemed the obvious choice, since I'd always regret not going for the bigger engine and it usualy comes with a better spec, including 18"s which were a must on my list.

rarely get above 22 in my s.s! Herminator if "As for the lower engine'd models, sorry i couldn't comment.I knew if there was a larger capacity varient available i would HAVE to have it so didn't even bother driving them." is your philosphy then why dont you drive an \\\M

Traffic and driving at low speeds in local areas with frequent gear changing is what gets me in the low 20s.

I live in West Yorkshire, or Speedcamerasville as it's also known, so it's rather difficult to avoid any high-gear cruising or traffic on any given journey. I'm sure I could get it lower by driving everywhere in third, but barring that with my driving style, even when I'm thrashing it, I can't get it lower than high-twenties over a whole tank.

One of the reasons I went for the 3.0i is that it had a lot of spec as standard, which made it easier to shop around for what you want. I wanted leather trim, 18" wheels, SMG, cruise control, and sports suspension; so once you've stripped out the kit standard on the 3.0i I only had to look for 18"s (which are on most 3.0i's anyway), SMG and cruise control. Being the range-topper they also tended to have been generously specced anyway, so I got extra goodies on mine that weren't deal breakers but I certainly enjoy (such as heated seats).

True about the spec on the bigger engine cars, much of which comes as standard such as wheels and ///M sport suspension and less obvious things like chrome headlight inserts, grille colour.

Original purchasers also certainly tend to add the book full of extras and they don't command the resale price they paid for them, but are great to have.

You don't know how lucky you are Andrew, i live in london so its town crawling, or out of town thrashing! Its that medium ground that means you probs get the good mpg's. Jammy bugger :D

Good point about the extras as standard, forgot about that.

Wow what a number of replies many thanks all.

Going to take them for a test drive but think the 3.0 will win out. What are you 3.0 drivers getting mpg wise and 2.0 drivers for that matter?

Cheers all.

Over a 100 mile journey at a steady speed, the best i have had is 38MPG. Otherwise the drive home from work through a city centre i can get anything from 22-28MPG. I really dont think its too bad to be honest.

I had an E46 Coupe and the gear change felt nothing more than a spoon in a rice pudding! ..........the z is miles better and has that clunk when engaging which i prefer. So if your after a clunky, sporty change which does feel great, dont worry. Now, as for the clutch, well.........

I get 42mpg+ in my 2.2 on a 100 mile round trip glasgow->edinburgh... but then i do drive like my Gran and she died in 1993.

steady speed, did you nod off :poke:

Seriously, a few runs of the same journey and i can easily get 36-38MPG cruising at a steady 80-85mph, thats all motorway driving. And thats without using the pointless cruise control.

What have you had ?

I've never got as high as 36-38, best is 32 maybe up to 33/34 on a long run. not found that cruise makes any difference to mpg personally - wouldn't call it pointless but that is a different argument :D
