2.0 or 2.5 under 60k miles

Hi,

I’m looking for a 2.0 ideally but will consider a 2.5.
2008 onwards, under 60k miles with a budget of 7k!

That’s a very healthy budget, go for a 2.5 all day long. 6 pot is much more reliable and a much smoother engine.

Good advice, thank you. Just need to find a well looked after one that somebody actually wants to sell!
Is the 2.5 suitable to use as a daily? Only concern is the fuel consumption

I doubt there is much real world difference in petrol consumption between the 2.0l and the 2.5l, it will be more dependent on how you drive it. There is also a 2.2l six cylinder engine, which was the most frugal option before the 2.0i was introduced.
For £7k you should be able to get a very decent example under 60k.

Thank you.
Is there much difference between 2.2 and 2.5 economy wise?
I’ve found what looks to be a nice one on AT.
2005 2.2 auto, under 50k miles for 6k

Thank you.

2005 2.2 auto, under 50k miles for 6k

Official overall figures for 2005 cars
2.0 manual only 37.7 mpg
2.2 manual/auto 32.1/30.4 mpg
2.5 manual/auto 31.7/29.7 mpg
3.0 manual/auto 31.0/29.7 mpg
Later cars (2006-) are slightly more efficient, particularly with the replacement of the M54 6-cyl engine with the N52.

So on paper it looks like little difference between the 6-cyl variants, whereas the 4-cyl is much more economical. It is different in the real world where the 2-litre requires “thrashing” to get the best out of it; and my 3-litre delivers anything between 18-36mpg depending on how it’s driven.

If economy is your primary concern, though, an Z4 is probably not the car for you :(

The 2.2 auto on Autotrader under 50k at less than £6k looks nice, but expensive. Autos are not as sought after and this car is a very basic spec. You could do better, particularly at this time of year when convertibles are still at their cheapest.

Finally, don’t get hung up on mileage. These engines are capable of very high mileages (>150k not at all unusual) and easy to maintain. Buy on condition, spec, service history etc.

You'll regret buying anything other than the 3.0i.

+1

Before I bought mine, I had a loaner 2.5 and it was so poor compared to the 3.0

If you were happy to have a pre 2006 Z4 you could pick up a really nice 3.0l Z4 with the mileage.

However if this is not of interest certainly go for the 2.5, the 6 cylinders are much nicer than the 2.0 four pot

Good luck with your search
