2.0 Cat

Hi,

Took my car in for service at BMW yesterday and now have a list of problems to fix

Have a split in my cat
Front exhaust bracket broke
New discs and pads needed all round
Front wishbone bushes needed
And a small oil leak but don't know where from

BMW have said total cost of about 1,800 pounds to fix!

So I'm gonna try and do things myself and cheaper if possible

Firstly are there any cheaper Cats available for the 2.0? Or a sports Cat or even a de-cat pipe available?

Will work my way round the rest but thought would start with the cat.

Or does anyone recomend a breakers yard for one? Never been to one tbh.

Any help much appreciated!

1. CAT is knackered so a new one required - worth shopping around at other exhaust suppliers. Link to the MOT regs on CATS http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_730.htm
2. Bracket - not sure where this is but a local garge should be able to re weld
3. This you can do yourself by sourcing discs and pads a lot cheaper than BMW
4. Not a job I have ever tackled but certainly do able - others may advise
5. Oil leak - park over some old newpaper after a run and then watch where the drips are and trace back as a starting point.
 
Ok I've managed to find an ordinary cat for 170 or a sports one for 190. De-cat was just 90 but thinking would want to pass an MOT

Would I see any benefits of a sports cat or not? Bearing in mind I only have a 2.0.
 
Might rev more freely with a less restrictive system but in reality I think the difference with just this mod alone would be minimal.

What did you do in the end?
 
I ended up just getting an ordinary cat but not one of the cheaper ones, I sourced a BMW one but didn't get it direct. In the end I felt the performance difference would be minimal and the quality would be better from an original part. My mechanic did a bit of work to source one from somewhere not sure where.

Car runs fine since though, he did say that when he took the cat off it just broke away into pieces so was defiantly on the a out.

Did cost a bit more to do through I felt worth it in the end
