I'm sure many of the forum zeds will now be on the wrong side of 100,000 miles . mine is hitting 125,000 ,pleased to say still running great .I changed the oil today ,filled up with edge 5W40 again , however I did consider using the thicker stuff .

What's the he consensus on using a thicker oil on high milaege zeds . e 85 M54

no dont do it, thats not high milage for that engine, and the oil will keep the performance.

do a search on high milage (500,000 plus) bmw motors and the oil used, you will be be very happy :)

I started using 10W40 to reduce oil consumption (about 1L every 1000-1500 miles) on my 3.0i (common symptom on the 3.0i) and that worked great.
Now I use 10W60 but I might switch back to 10W40 (but that is only available in half synthetic).

You should only switch from the recommended 5w40 if you have problems. Like oil consumption (not common on the 2.5i), or ratteling at startup (valvetrain) or things like that.
If the engine sounds fine, it probably is.
