108 Spacers

What size spacers should I get for the 108's on my ///M this winter, the fronts seem to fit but the rears definitely touch. Is there a standard size I should use.

20mm or 25mm spacers on the rears will be about right to match OEM fitment

the 108's rear is: 8.5J J x18 ET:52, standard M is 9JX18 ET30. A 27mm spacer will get you back to stock... however if you want it to look better i would say 40mm (using the fact that some people add 10-15mm spacers to their M make them flush)

But the prob is at 40mm you are adding additional stress on your hub, which isnt worth it over looks.
 
You'd be crazy to fit spacers of anything like the sizes mentioned on a high performance car like the ///M

Having a much narrower axcle it needs correct offset wheels to look right (and be safe)
 
Well it looks like they sit about 18mm further in, so a 20mm spacer should do the trick. As they sit they just about touch the inner plastic arch. Any recommended make of spacer?

@cj10jeeper - I hear what you say but these are my winter wheels and won't be put under much stress at all.

20mm spacers arrived today, I'll fit them as soon as the temperatures drops low enough, then I'll finally get to see what the car looks like with 108's.

As for the idea of putting stresses on the axle, I'm sure using spaces to set an incorrect offset won't create too much additional stress if any. The tyre will be basically in the same place and just the spokes will be offset from the standard wheel. I can understand putting spacers on standard wheels may have a bad effect but in this case I'm not so sure it will be a problem.

The easiest way to describe it is trying to undo a nut/ bolt. If its really tough you'd get a long breaker bar which give you leverage.

Thats what the spacers are doing, shifting the leverage point out, while wheels with the correct offset sit nearer to the hub, but extend out.

If that makes any sense?

Did you go for huncentric spacers?

@aquazi. Yes I understand that, I'm saying that putting spacers on with standard wheels will as CJ10 said put extra stress on the hubs etc. However if I use a spacer to basically move the rim and tyre (on a wheel with a non standard offset) to the right place, all I've done is put the mass of the wheel where it should be with only the spokes creating a different leverage.

When the temperatures drop from the Indian summer high we have here I'll see if there's any difference and whether the 108's fall off.

It's an interesting question of using a spacer to correct the offset to what it should be. If that's what you're in effect doing I think it negates the geometry concerns (ignoring for now all those related to stess, long bolts, extra mass, etc.) I'll let an engineer challenge this statement :)

Incedentally a bolt is supposed to hold things together by causing friction between 2 mating surfaces. In the instance of adding a spacer it's now holding 4 mating faces together separated by in this case 20mm. Very dangerous..

Most issues occur when using a spacer to push a wheel to a greater offset than original. That really buggers up the geometry and resultant handling. Easy way to visualise what'd happening is to clench your fist hold you phone on the end to replicate the wheel and watch the arc of the phone when moving the wrist. Now move the phone out 20mm and repeat, noting how the phone moves in a totally different arc. Much greater arc, throwing the 'wheel' more forward and backwards.

Done a bit more scientifically it's easy to see how many of the key steering settings are now screwed up. we have big issues with this on Jeeps where spacers reduce turning circle, induce bump steer, tyre scrub and a whole variety of ills. We end up widening axles to make it work....
