03" E85 M54B22 Coolant Colour

By the very light red in mine I am fairly sure it has been changed to the newer clear universal coolant and the colour is just a bit of old residue. This was confirmed by a hygrometer which showed a high level of protection (minus 30) and the bitter taste to the coolant. This will be birtex or whatever it's called which has been added in recent years to stop people poisoning cats. Now theres a thought!!

If your confident that its OK then probably best to leave it,

By hydrometer do you mean the thing with the floating discs?

I used one of them on neat coolant and sometimes all six discs floated indicating too much coolant and sometimes only five indicating it was mixed 50:50, and on a ready mixed bottle I got between 5 and 3 discs, and similar on what is now in my car so I don't think they are that accurate but they definitely do detect coolant in the system.

No not floating discs as such but a pipette with a floating thingy which has graduations showing strength of antifreeze.
Also sure that for those who have cars serviced by a garage they will not be so particular when topping up the coolant and will in all probability use the universal coolant .
Now happy new year to everyone and safe motoring in 2024. Now where did I put my drink, sorry not antifreeze, that reserved for the neighbours cats

I've been using Prestone All Makes green coolant for decades on my M54B30 engine and it's still great! I make sure to mix it 50/50 with distilled water though. In a pinch I had to use tap water once but I doubt that did anything at all.

I know people who drift BMW cars and run them hard with Prestone coolant and everything is A-OK lol

Oh my god, what happened to those happy days when I would go to my local motorshop up the road and just by bottle of antifreeze to mix with tap water :headbang:

I need to apologise to my car for fifteen years and ninety thousand miles of abuse! Antifreeze (in the form of whatever came to hand) and distilled water is all mine received from me for ten years in the UK (unless it was serviced by a garage), and I’ve not bothered with antifreeze for the five years it’s been in Aus

ETA - I’ve just ordered a hydrometer out of curiosity, just to see if there’s any coolant floating around in mine
