Good power-weight facts

They would be if they were correct! The N52 is 15kg lighter, therefore, the power to weight is actually 139.76 bhp per ton. The M54 at 1260kg has a bhp per ton of 150. The reason the lower power 2.5 accelerates just 0.1 sec to 60 slower is the closer ratios of the 6-speed versus the 5-speed box, which will also be of benefit above 60. If you 177 feels abysmally slower than a 189 then you have something wrong with your engine and needs checking.
The choice between a low mileage 177 and a high mileage 189 is really quite easy.

Bollocks. I've had 7 z4s now and I think i know them pretty well thanks. 2 of which have been 177s and they are gutless, no two ways about it. The m54 feels quicker and rightfully so. I didn't buy the car for power Its just a toy I can enjoy on a sunny day and that's alright with me.

If your seat of the pants dyno can tell the difference between 0-60 of 7.0secs and 7.1secs all well and good, if you think there is a big difference between yours and a 189 then I respectfully suggest that there is something wrong with yours?

Apologies it was a bit tongue in cheek but I appreciate how it come across.

I really know what your saying but honestly there isn't, the performance is just somewhat disappointing from the 177bhp. I've had two and both were the same so I think I'd be very unlucky if they were both buggered! I just think they are lacking somewhat, no bother anyway as I have swapped it for this today

Is there simple way of getting the older engine up to the power of the later engine?

Short answer: no. And it isn't worth trying.

I've not driven the 2.5 N52, but I daily the 3.0 N52 SI. I'd say that the N52s do still have some faults, and I think they're harder to trace than on the older engine, so that's something that's worth considering.

In my opinion, I'd either stick with what you have, or go up to a 3litre car.
