Severn Bridge Closure - 23 & 24th April

Forthcoming maintenance closures:


M48 Severn Bridge Closed for a multitude of Maintenance work
Closed Westbound only (into Wales)
on April 23rd & 24th from 06:00 Sat - 20:00hrs Sunday
(This will not affect the English Welsh Meet)

The M4 Second Severn Crossing remains open as normal in both direction.

I work on the Severn Crossings, so am often privy to whats going on and what maintenance is planned. I'm aware that between us and the Highways Agency, we are not the best at communicating closures to the public by road signs, especially when things change last minute due to weather conditions and other various factors meaning the bridge is actually open !

Therefore I thought I'd start this thread and refresh it, whenever we plan (or cancel) a closure, so people can plan their routes (and trips up the Wye Valley !).

A1) It's buy one, get one free... £6.40 over but we let you come back for free !

The bridge is paid for now, but Number5's Zed is high maintenance

Its all very complex, so it's far easier to just say I'm saving up for my ///M !

Next Planned Closure: Westbound on the 'Old' M48 bridge, 21:00 Friday 30th May until small hours of Monday 2nd June. (subject to dry weather)

New Maintenance Closure details added to opening post for May' & June. If it's wet or too windy, these closures may not happen, but a decision is usually made on the Thursday beforehand.

Ha Ha !

Joking apart, Its to avoid the weight of vehicles queuing across the old bridge.
(Originally you did pay in both directions, but it was changed years before the new crossing was built and you obviously cant have one bridge tolling Eastbound and the other not, hence the new Tolls being sited about 2-3 miles away from the bridge).

M48 (Old Severn Bridge)
- 21:00 Hrs Friday 30th May until 06:00 Monday 2nd June (Westbound Only Closed)
(Bad weather may postpone this closure)

M4 Second Severn Crossing
M4 22:00 Friday 6th June until 10:00 hrs Sunday 8th June - Restricted to one lane only Westbound
M4 22:00 Friday 13th June until 10:00 hrs Sunday 15th June - Restricted to one lane only Eastbound

This closure is going ahead this weekend on the M48 bridge due to a fairly dry forecast.

Used the old bridge at the weekend as TomTom diverted me saving 15 minutes or so it said. The old road was dead quiet. In-laws queued at the tolls on the new bridge for quite some time :lol:

I assume the price is the same on both bridges so that the newer bridge is used more, otherwise we would all use the old bridge.

Yep, same price.
The new crossing takes about 80% of the traffic but the agreement to run the crossings dictated that the new bridge will finance the maintenance of the old bridge, as its now officially a Grade I listed structure.

If ever an event on in Cardiff or a bank holiday weekend, its always worth using the Old bridge as there are far less queues !

Only Eastbound.... !

Even the staff have to pay for Personal crossings. Only crossings to and from work or during the course of Bridge business are exempt.

The re-surfacing work has now been postponed due to a wet weather forecast, so now open as usual
