bmw bbs 5 spoke split rims

the 2 piece wheels are certainly classy and made by bbs.......the 203 look nice and certainly wont have the same issues.

it is personal preference. in the future im going to paint behind my spokes. eliminating the crap finish all together

If you can wangel new alternative style wheels I can recommend the style 203 :D I like them better than the 108's I had before... see my pics here
I may get the effected wheel changed then use it as an excuse to the missus to get some 19" CSL's and Ebay the 108's! :P

bored again today so thought id take the wheels a step further.

the inside of the wheels let all the hard work i had done on th faces. this is the first time ive sprayed with any success. i was quite chuffed!

1 x can white primer
1x can bmw titan silver
1x can clear laquer

800 grit paper

plenty of hot sun and suncream

Bloody hell, at this rate you will be starting up your own wheel refurb business !....really good write up as i have the 108's, they were refurbed in january by the dealership, but now i have noticed that there are a few places starting to bubble on the outside edge, the wierd thing is its happened without anything actually coming into contact with it. i.e kerbing or tyre changing etc.

i am considering going down the same route as you, however as they are on the car it means that i wont be able to drive it whilst i do it.

they are worth it as they are stunning wheels. theres great satisfaction to be had from having done it yourself.

its been a few hours an evening.... perfect for a little project

no, its close and its a clean and tidy look. it dosnt look much different than how it was new.

i dont unfortunately know the paint code for the spokes

quite easily i would expect. apparently theres a clear powder coat available?

ive done all the wheels now, bar one which is good (my first) the others are perfect.

Update on my corroding 108. Dealer looked at wheel and is replacing it with a new one. Looking at the photos of the wheels taken apart though I guess it will happen again to 1 or all of them at some point as road salt will just get trapped behind the spider!, so I may go for the CSL route and sell them on. Shame, nice wheels but the lasting quality just isn't there! Very un-BMW! :?

Thats exactly why I changed mine for different design instead of forking out for a refurb. When I cleaned the old wheels up before taking photos they were flat and no water was showing... tipped them up vertical and a load of water came out from between the rim and the star :o

Great results Pablo and good write ups of the project.

I have just one concern and that is (unless I missed it somewhere) that the rims have been reasembled without using a torque wrench. To me this is an imperative due the the way the forces act between spoke and outer rim. The locktite will prevent them moving, but that itself can create a false torque by lubricating the bolts and alloowing an artificially high torque.

I have only one experience of split rims where the owner changed the bolts and did not torque tighten and that was at 80mph in a 2 ton supercharged Jeep Cherokee. We were lucky to live when 1 then 2 then 3, 4, 5 bolts sheared causing a total collapse of the rim at one point as we coasted to a hlt. One bolt has sheared off increasing the force on the others that popped like dominos falling. One other rim had a single bolt sheared too and the return drive to the UK was completed at 50MPH. All bolts replaced torqued to EOM spec and not an issue for him since.

i appreciate the concern. these cases are few. the great website of http://www.wheel-whores.com (excuse the name) covers rebuilds of hundreds of wheels many bbs. most are done like mine with no issues.

it seems that most bbs wheel (rm lm etc) are 12 foot lbs. im unsure what the 108 wheel is exactly. from much reading and questioning it seemed that many experienced people did hand tight on small ratchets without any repercussions

most owners dont correctly torque there wheel nuts........just tight on a breaker bar...

whats the correct torque for the wheel nuts?

Pablo - I appreciate the fact that a 'hand torque' can for some people be done very effectively, however my concern isd that when posting, safe is better than sorry. I'd also suggest that when tightening these bolts they be done in the correct sequene. not around the rim, so 12 o'clock, 6, 3, 9, etc to avoid stessses on one part.

chaiszzz - correct torque for wheel nuts is entirely depenedant upon a whole slew of issues. number of bolts, size if rims and tyres, torqued wet or dry, angle of lug chamfer, etc. I'm on vacation half way up a mountain so cannot access my data to tell you the Z4 standard torque, but it's in the manual.

Edit:
Forgot to say that I fell in love with these rims on an X5 in Puerto Banus today. Very cool Schnitzers that I could see on the Z4:

seen a few Z4's with these rims phil and they don't really work for me, i am still hankering after a set of CSL reps with the dished rears as per E46 but there are so many conflicting reports of fitment not right for Z4....
