Dashboard cameras - recommendations?

Any recommendations under a £100 for a dashboard camera (and mount)?

Thinking of investing and the selection and variety is amazing - value for money is what I'm looking for - I'm not a camera whizz nor technician - need something I can fix on press a button and go, then easy download.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I have some experience of 3 types. cheapo type from ebay costing about £60, worked OK but couldn't tell what it was doing and picture very shaky (not stabilised), Then bought a GoPro HD which is MUCH better, excellent video quality, very robust and image stabilised. Still has a slight problem of having to manually press the record button on the front and no rear tell-tale led letting you know what happening. Just had GoPro 3 Black for Crimbo and all the issues addressed, wi-fi real time streaming to phone, remote control from phone or included remote and Leds everywhere so you know when its recording. Way over your budget though at about £300. Used HDs can be had for just over £100 on ebay (mines there with a BIN of £140 to include a few extra goodies)

hope that helps

Obviously Santa never received your letter Paul :headbang:

I am after something similar as I am no camera whizz kid either, so it will be interesting to see what is recommended.

Well I've just been testing one this afternoon.
Based upon recommendations from many users on the Jag forum I purchased this bit of kit for just over £40 which has both front and rear cameras, power, leads & remote control

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321226920418

Chose a UK supplier and paid a little more, but gives me someone to assist with warranties.

Needed a SD card (£8) and hard wire fused power supply for 12v to 5v USB (£1.40 from HK) to power up on engine running.

Did some testing today using the internal battery and I'm really impressed. Very clear picture and perfect if you're looking for something to record traffic to defend yourself in the event of a claim.

I'll be hard wiring into the Zed soon and then getting a second kit for the XF.

I have the gopro 3+ black as well - excellent but out of your price range - I have got good results from my iphone 5 in the past on a suction mount - have you got a smart phone?

Coincidence --I was looking at dash cams online this morning. Looking at the Go-Pro ....anyone know anything about the "Silver" ?? not sure I need everything that the 3+ black does.
and I'm hearing about a GoPro 4 now..? any comments ?

There are rumours that the 4 will have 3d

I was also considering the silver vs black but went for the black. I am thinking of getting a dji phantom and the superview sounded like a good idea. Also there was something else maybe the time lapse is only on the black? You also get the remote with the black which will be handy although iPhone connectivity works well

I got one on eBay brand new from a seller on eBay from Jersey for £300 and it arrived next day which I was very impressed with

Oh and the official suction mount can be bought at £25 from Argos. Essential if you plan on sticking it on the outside of the car suitable up to 150 mph I think I read. Don't think I would trust an eBay one outside the car although have ordered lots of cheap bits from eBay

Bite the bullet spend the cash.
Go Go-pro. If you want to get a bargain pick up a older model(new) or buy one off someone who is upgrading to a 3.
You will not be disappointed. I have the the Go-pro2

I don't mind spending the money, but for me for what I want it for I would find it hard to justify spending hundreds of pounds on a camera for forum runs etc, but appreciate what you have said Toe-side. I would be more than happy to spend up to £100, so guess I am still looking for suitable and acceptable alternatives :)

Have you got a smart phone that will do the trick????

Or if you don't need the other features of a gopro and it's size what about something like a Hd video camera that works on cards. I have one something like this which will give you a great picture and may not be suitable for other activities but will be fine on your dash

I have a good HD video cam and I'm trying to figure out a mount for the dash ....

Lots on eBay. Look for camera dash mount. - they are normally standard tripod fixing unlike go pro

Looks interesting, however not sure about how it would mount on the windsreen or if there are any alternative mounts available that would do the job
