inspection 2

Just had an inspection 2 done today at my local BMW dealer here in Germany. (Euler Group) Had a general full diagnostics done as well to sort an occasional rough idle and reduced fuel economy. Total bill came to 649 Euro/553 quid. Ouch!! Remains to be seen how the inspection may have effected the fuel economy. I picked the car up after the shop closed. So I haven't talked with the service manager about the diagnostics results.

Went and talked to the service manager about the diagnostics. Seems there was a fault coded and stored away. What bugs me. Is the fact that in the nearly 3 years I have owned the zed. (June 2010) I've never had a check engine light come on. The fault was hard for the tech to explain as his English is about as rubbish as my German. Near as I could tell. There was an issue with the sensors on the camshaft that monitor oil pressure for the vanos. They said that as a result. The vanos was not working fully. They cleaned the sensors and reset/cleared the fault. The midrange torque is vastly improved and has much better response. This fault must have been there before I bought the car. I had no frame of reference to compare the power of the car. This may explain why I have been a bit critical about my Zed being stomped on by GTI's. Another confusing thing is how could the car have an unresolved camshaft oil pressure fault that effects the vanos without lighting up the check engine light. A call a US dealer may be in order for further explanation. :scratchhead:

Sounds cheap, I'm sure an Insp II at a UK dealer would be nearer £900, (it is for an M anyway).

Cost me that for Isp 1. Have since found an indy.

Can I just check that I have to use BMW to do my inspection 2, otherwise my warranty is void? Or can I use an indy and maintain the warranty?

There's quite a delta on the difference of the indy prices and dealers!

Who's the warranty with?

The only way to really know is to read your policy booklet.

Mine going into local indie next week £550 plus whatever else needs doing (cam sensor coils etc,not running good at moment)

Just came back from Inspection 2 at BMW in Borehamwood.

Paid £355

2 other North London dealer both quoted me £420-450.

Happy as borehamwood is 5mins away and less of a faff to get to than East Finchley Service centre which is Kentish Town.

Bmerc is also down the road from me, but since it's a service i wanted it to be at BMW.
If work needed doing i'd probably go indie depending on the prices.

BMW matched my price from a dealer down south £ 325 for inspection 2 ! Think that's a great price. I now phone around other BMW & local Indy's get prices & then go into local dealer, they have price matched the last few times on both my cars. you don't ask,you don't get

For the Yanks out there, I'd like to report getting my Inspection 2 done for $443 (tax included) at an independent shop on the Gulf Coast. For that price, they also fixed a tire (nail), "gave" me 2 cans of fuel additive to remove engine deposits, and ran a diagnostic on my alarm. It turns out the "brain" needs to be replaced. I'm not wasting another cent on BMW's crappy alarm system. I'll deal with sporadic false alarms and no beep on locking the car (most times). My cabin filter was so dirty, it is now on display in the office of the shop; it looks as though it had never been changed in 6 years on the road. I guess the PO didn't get it changed. The AC was colder than I ever remember on the way home, so I think it made a big difference. Or, my mind is trying to rationalize the almost $100 the filter and labor cost me.

Next week, I'll have my roof motor changed at the stealership (supposedly under the certified pre-owned warranty). A few more minor bits, and it'll be like a new car.

That's worth remembering...........guess Stephen James (Enfield) was one of the other quotes. :D
