Aero Wiper Blades

Bought some of the Valeo retrofit ones at the weekend from Halfrauds and no sooner than they went on the car did they come straight back off again - they look horrid and the passenger wiper is off the screen by a good few inches where the windscreen curves by the tax disc. They'll be going back shortly...

Will go for some of the Bosch ones instead I think! I believe these are the ones we need from Wiperblades.co.uk:

Wiper blades own brand are really good, ive had loads in the past year or two. (Z4,350Z,Celica,Swift Sport,Octavia)

I bought the Bosch ones from and took them back the next day as they stuck out about 31mm from the tax disc, the visible wipe was fine but I aint having a coat hook on my screen!

That's the only reason I haven't upgraded to aero blades. They're vastly superior in action, but I just can't handle their inability to properly wrap around the screen when idle

I fitted bosch aero blades at the weekend - yes they stick out a bit by the tax disk but your cant see this from in the car and IMHO the vastly superior silent wipe is worth this sacrifice

I bought these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320643023825#ht_823wt_1139 cheap as chips :D

Am I the only one on here who has standard wipers that work?
... I must just be lucky I guess!

I have just replaced the originals (on an 07) - all wipers will wear out as the rubber perishes/stiffens

Well yeah obviously, but why change from the standard ones when they work fine? They clear the screen, and the same style clear the screens on my other cars too. And as they do clear the screen how can you up grade from that, as that is all they are meant to do.

This is more of a styling modification rather than an upgrade. Each to their own I guess.

By design they have more even pressure across the length of the wiper and are less susceptible to lift at speed.

They therefore offer superior wiping performance, are quieter in operation and last longer.

LOL... how fast have you driven with your wipers on? Do you get lift on your Z4? Maybe older cars with slacker spring tensioners. I can safely say mine still wipe the screen at high speeds. As i said, each to their own... but if you do get your wipers lifting at speed you might want to take it to a main dealer for them to look at the problem

P.S. There's nothing wrong with a styling modification, as long as they aren't passed off as something else. This is along the same lines as someone having an exhaust knocked up by Powerflow or Longlife and saying it's a performance upgrade... nope it's a styling mod. As I said there's nothing wrong with this, but it is what it is. Bung these on a Mk2 MR2 and it's a performance upgrade as their wipers were known to lift above 60mph, but an upgrade to a Z4? Really?

Have you actually used Bosch Aero Wipers? They're vastly superior to stock wipers - almost completely silent, perfect wipe (you may think you have that already... you don't), and less obstructive to the view.

Not sure what the hostility is against these wipers? They definitely work better, at a cost of not wrapping the screen when idle. No one is forcing you to buy them...

Are you comparing these to brand new OE blades or ones which have been on the car a few years?

The point I'm making is there's nothing wrong with these, but they can't be vastly superior to a standard set up when the standard set up clears the screen with a "perfect wipe" when the rubber is new. Nor does it make a noise. And if you are getting wiper lift, this is not down to the wiper arm, blade or any of those components, it's due to the tensioner.

So pointless changing if you are after an upgrade... as a replacement part when the old ones have worn out and you want something a little more stylish yes, but you'd need new ones anyway. These just remind me of the 5 edge blades of the 90s that were hugely promoted, but people only ever compared them to the blades they were taking off and not against brand new rubbers.

phew, I was beginning to feel I was loosing the battle on my own

The old fashioned wipers dont lift as the drivers side has a spoiler (and yes as they have aged I have noticed increasing noise/judder on the motorway caused by lift and hardening rubber), with the aero wipers the spoiler isnt required.

I can't compare to brand new OEM blades. However I had Aero blades (OEM - Bosch) on my Civic that were 4.5 years old. They made zero noise @ 4.5 years old with no water (ie. still silent at the height of summer with no rainclouds in sight) on the windscreen whatsoever and continued to clear the windscreen without issue at motorway speeds in very heavy rain. They could also be used in icey weather without issue - they wont' break if you activate them when frozen to the screen. Meanwhile the wipers on my Z4 (presumably 3yrs old?) judder, make noise and will break if activated when frosty. The definitely don't clear the windscreen with the same effectiveness. I think it's fair to compare older aero to younger normal? Given the price is roughly the same and you have to replace the OEMs with more regularity then at the very least the Aeros are cheaper in the long-run.

I'll still just replace with OEM on my Z4 though, I don't like the wiper hanging off the end around the tax disc.

Not being funny with this statement and don't wanna stir this up any further as we obviously all have different opinions, but if you are paying £20 odd for standard style wipers you need to shop about as I just picked up a drivers one for £4 and a passenger one for £3.80 (from Trago Mills) both champion, the bosch ones were about £2 more each. Or just replace the rubbers with some champion ones at £2 a pack of 2. Can change them every every 6 months at that price if you wish. Most discount motor factors sell around this sorta price, well they do down this direction anyway.

Anyone fitted other than OEM that don't hang off the screen?
Need new wipers but not sure what to buy now. :scratchhead:

My Mrs drives a W reg Almeria and her wipers needed changing, so I thought I'd try the £3 bargain wipers from our local Tesco's. Tried just the passenger side first as I thought, if they're shy't, a £3 loss isn't the end of the world. It worked suprisingly well so got the other one and the pair work fine, clearing water as you would expect wipers to do so.

These £3 a side wipers are also now on my Z4, doing what wipers should do and doing it well.

oh, both 20 blades.

Job done :D
