Which to buy, 2007 Z4 or 2011 Chevy Camaro

Hello all:

My wife and I are buying a car in the next week and we are either buying a 2007 Z4 ($20k) or 2011 Chevy Camaro ($23.5k). Which would be more fun? Which would I suffer less financial loss from in 2 years when I sell it? I know that we are most likely going to sell the car in a couple years to get a more family friend vehicle, but for now we want something more fun. Which would we be less upside down on?

thanks,
SR

Well unless the chevy transforms into bumblebee I'd plump for the Zed 4, but then on this forum i would say that wouldn't i

I would imagine the two are totally different drives so the cowards answer is, drive both and which one leaves the biggest and longest smile. As for residuals - i'll leave that for wiser forum members to discuss. I would imagine the older car has already had the bulk of its' depreciation whereas, if your talking brand new - off the shelf camaro, then i guess that has some dollars to drop.
Good luck and enjoy the dilemma.

Agree with roofless. Go for the Chevy Camaro in yellow with 2 black strips in the middle. It will looks very cool.

Chevy said that they would make right hand drive, but later they changed their mind.

Depends which engine Z4 too I suppose, if it's the 3.0 then personally I would probably go for the Z4. If it was the V8 Camaro and I lived in America then it might be more of a close call. Having recently got rid of a Pontiac Trans Am (V8) which is identical to the Camaro, albeit the old version. It was rubbish to drive in the UK on twisty roads, the handling was shocking and build quality inside very cheap and nasty, the engine was lovely though. In the US it would have been a little more practical given the many long straight and wide roads.

I had 2 weeks with a V6 Mustang and found it horribly underpowered, quite frankly pathetic but for an everyday car it would be ok, interior was basic but much better quality than my old Trans Am so I imagine the new Camaro would be similar. You'll get better fuel economy out of a Z4 too, the V6 and V8 Chevy engines are roughly the same on fuel and the max you will EVER see is 30mpg, town is about 19-24mpg.

Unfortunately the only real problem is the Camaro looks 10x better than the Z4, but the roof doesn't come off like the old one or the Z4....so really the choice has to be down to what it is that floats your boat. Test drive both.

Going with the plan of replacing in a couple of years. A new vehicle gives you peace of mind for any problems (should be covered under warranty) but you're looking at taking the new car depreciation hit on the financial side. The 2007 Z4 is out of the 4 yr warranty period and potentially could cost a bundle for repairs. BMWs are not cheap to work on. If you buy the Z, then a second party coverage plan might be wise. Be careful to fully read and understand what is/is not covered under the plan.

BMW's are pretty reliable and don't tend to cost a lot to run. I've had mine for 3 years ( now well over 7 years old) and the only money I've spent outside 2 routine services and tyres and brakes, was 2 new springs, not expensive. It runs like a dream.I'd take the chance with the Z4.

ski_rush, welcome to the forum...
As others have said, "drive both" then decide.
You will take a pretty big hit the first year on the Camaro so from just a financial point of view the Zed would likely make more sense.

Your posting this on a Z4 forum so opions are likely to be biast... personally having driven a camaro when i was in the states I found it very heavy and pretty unresponsive - imo if i rental car had been a golf i would probably have had more fun with it

But the V6 noise is very nice... and in a straight line it felt pretty quick.

I'm impressed actually. We haven't had a bunch of people blindly say Z4. :poke: :poke:

Me personally I love the camaro's (wait till the next meet when I wear my hat). Now that said, for the new ones, yeah I wouldn't get one unless it was the SS. I don't know how they handle for corners (yet) but I think it would be safe to say the Z4 would win that battle. I'm making it a point to test drive a camaro in March/April when I will be in the states. You have to consider maintenance too, if you live somewhere near a bigger city where there is BMW mechanics then yay or if your in an area like my hometown then the nearest mechanic that will touch a BMW for anything more than tires is 1 1/2 hour + away. Last but not least, as others said, depreciation wise, the 2007 Z4 has already lost the major depreciation so you should only lose a little bit from it compared to what you'll lose on the Camaro.

A camaro may turn some heads at a gear head convention but unfortunately it can't turn corners. There is no comparison between a z and a camaro, the z wins on every point except possibly brute HP. Now if you were looking at a Boss 302 mustang I might be moved to the ford , but I think a basic Camaro vs z4 is a no brainer.

Please ignore the fact that I have three Z cars, I grew up here and have known many TA and Camaro owners  Honest, I'm not biased at all....

Saw a black camaro on foreign plates at London Bridge last week, I love the look of them (would have to be bumblebee yellow!) but have no idea what they are like to drive enthusiastically.
