MENTAL PRICE INCREASE ON WINTER TYRES

Mr Whippy - Winter tyres can grip even on an ice rink so they will definitely help even on compacted snow and ice.
Now, I'm a winter tyre fan-boi but even I struggle to believe winter tyres will give much grip on sheet ice. There's little friction able to be generated between ANY tyre and solid, smooth ice, so it's unlikely winter tyres will be much better than regular ones on sheet ice. Their tread pattern design and the compound are designed to work better in snow (deeper grooves to clear it etc) and the compound works better when cold, but the only thing that's going to significantly improve matters on ice is spiked tyres...

If you are planning to keep your zed for along time then the money invested in winter tyres make sence and you have the room to store them ( not every one has a garage or shed though ) but in extream weather conditions i think it wont matter what tyres you have on you are going to be knacked and as long as you drive to the conditions a cheep punto or like wise wont make much differance in breaking or driving.

Also bear in mine it might not be you doing the crashing it might be some uninsured idiot ploughing into your pride and joy ok the insurance will fix it but that will show up on HPI check and now your cars worth 75% of value now :( .
Just a thought. :)

Have you see that video on youtube on the Ice ring?

I'll post it up when I get home.

Hark - I'm at work so can't post that either but it's exactly what I was going to do to illustrate the grip of these things on an ice rink!! :driving:

A11y - Here's the link that shows why I reckon they'll give grip even on the most icy roads imaginable!

Everybody knows BMW's are useless in the snow/ice, you may as well not bother!! Im fortunate in that i have the use of my company Navara equipped with all-terrains in the winter, efforts in anything else (non 4x4) in that stuff we had last year was futile. Would you really want to risk your Zed in slippy conditions anyway?

Not all of us have company Navaras to use as an alternative. Winter tyres do make make the Z4 drivable, even in last years conditions. You are underestimating the difference they make.

I am just about to change the all weather tyres from the X5 to put my winter wheels on. Even in a 4x4, last winter was hopeless driving around until I put winter tyres on.

They make all the difference, on any car.

EFA.

I took my e36 all around the Clent Hills lanes in the worst of January's snow just to see what the Snowtrac 3 tyres are capable of.

Absolutley no drama or fuss either going up or coming down.

Really? I was under the impressions that even with winter tyres they were pretty useless due to the no weight over driven wheels thing? I stand corrected, also didnt wish my post to sound all smarmy oooh look at me ive got a 2nd car ner ner, which upon reflection it could to some.

I didn't mean that to come across like a chastisement either, a smiley would have been appropriate. All I meant was that I've only got one car to rely on and don't want to go down the route of having 2 cars for different conditions.

I think that when we purchase a car like ours we should make up our minds as to "Do I drive this car in winter or not"? If the answer is "I will" then we must calculate the price for winter tires into the purchase price. We need to do this for the safety of our loved ones as well for others on the road. Not to speak about monetary loss that can result on your car that you cherish so much. In many parts of our country it is becoming the law to have snow tires on your car during winter months. Anyone driving in snow and wet road winter conditions without snow tires just is not thinking right.

I just lost (2 weeks ago) a good friend he was 28 years young. His plan was to install his winter set at the end of this month. He visited a loved one up north in his M3 while overtaking a car during high wind and wet road conditions his car lost control and he hit a tree. A few days later he passed on due to severe injuries he sustained.

Naturally winter driving skills need also be applied. There is plenty of information out there now that you just can Google your question and tons of information will flow your way :)

Just my 2 cents on the subject. :)

I pick up my Z4C this weekend, its my first RWD car. Ive had my fair share of fast machinery, S3's, Golf GTi's, currently running a mk3 Golf with an R32 engine in so i know im used the speed element. My sister owns a 3.0 Z3 which ive driven many times, but never in the winter. A lot of people say that you have to be driving pretty stupidly to lose traction in a Z4, is this the case or do you have to be on your toes when exiting corners, applying throttle etc?

lol

Don't know who has told you that. You can make the rear wheels spin in the dry on a Z4M. In the wet it's even easier.

Hehe, at this time of the year it'll want to spin/slide the back in 3rd gear at full throttle from about 3000rpm onwards in a bit of a bend. That is on your average sports tyre.

You want winter tyres, or drive like a saint :D

I've been using the driving like a saint option and it works ok, but I'd be happier on winter tyres on 16's or 17's :D

Or just drive an old fwd car on those days it's really bad.

Having survived last year winter with my Eagle F1s on 17s - 8 mile each way daily commute through the snow... the Z's on staggered 18s this year so I've bitten the bullet and ordered up some winter tyre - finding the damn things was difficult enough, let alone worrying about the price. In case anyone else is struggling for stock...
I also bought mine through http://www.mytyres.co.uk - they seem to have the best stock. Prices seem to be okay too, although I didn't check too thoroughly.

As Ally mentioned there is a difference between summer and winter tyres as to what's reputable, these links have some reviews / review sites to help tak some of the guess work out of the process...

Oh, I went for the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D - will give feedback once they've a few hundred miles past being worn in :driving:

Yep, that's probably going to happen

I've not covered many miles with my winters on yet, but I wasn't too convinced about them on Saturday in 4degC wet conditions. They're not worn in yet as they've only covered around 100miles and half of that's been in the wet/cold.
