Oil Change @ National Tyres

Having read all the posts about where to buy right oil and how to change it, are other people not taking advantage of the oil change at National Tyres? They change oil and filter for c.£40 all inclusive and this is with Castrol Edge 5w30. Plug in your number plate and it advises the recommended oil. As you can watch them physically open and fill the oil yourself this is probably cheaper than buying the oil on its own.

Ive booked mine in for a non log book stamped oil change (peace of mind). The official bmw service is not due for another 6 months.

They probably use it as a loss leader to get extra work out of the unsuspecting motorist.

"Here's you car back sir, the oil service went fine. By the way, did you know you have 3 bald tyres and a corroded exhaust."

Possible but when im at the garage if possible i try and get to watch to make sure they do it right, also means a good opportunity to scope out underneath the car.

I saw this offer and wondered if it was too good to be true and so I rang the local National Tyres and spoke to them first hand. I asked him if it was right cos I couldn't buy the oil for that money and his response was ''if the company want to lose money it's up to them'' I asked him about the oil and if it was Castrol Edge and he said ''yes if we can get it'' so you are right to keep an eye on them.
I'll be really interested to know how you get on. When are you booked in?

it's like ATS who do MOTs for 20 quid nowadays. I assumed they'll suddenly find a load wrong with the car that would require a pile 'o' cash but the two young blokes I spoke to there had the same attitude as your mate above, "if the company want to make a loss that's fine as long as they pay us".

Just checked the online ordering site for National and with online discount the oil change comes in at £30.60 (or £36.55 with engine flush) for a 2.5, using Castrol edge 5W30... seems like a bargain.

It goes in today, the father in law is kindly taking it in and will be watching them do it. When you book it up, they order the oil in, you cant just turn up so if its not the right oil that arrives I wont let them put it in. It would give them a good likelihood of return business if they dont try and charge for other jobs. As they are only changing oil i dont see any reason why they would notice any problems with the car - unless the oil they took out showed signed of worn gaskets etc which you should have already noticed signs for already.

Car all done for £36 and the guy greased up a few joints from the underneath for free when it was on the ramp. Always a good way to get to inspect the underside of the car! Very happy with the service although the price was apparently due to go up from this weekend.

when I bought my car the salesman told me that there is absolutely nothing with getting the car serviced at one of these garages and getting the book stamped there!
He also said that if I took my car back to him to trade it in, it would make no difference at all to him in terms of trade in value!
I would feel better if I were buying a car with a full BMW service history! What do you lot think of this ?

just try to trade it in and see if he was liying about it not beeing an problem.

altough cheap service is better then no service at all! :poke:

If you take your car back to dealer as part exchange, the dealer will only take it and resell it at their dealership if your car has FBMWSH. I don't think dealers will sell used cars without full FBMWSH.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear, I didn't buy my car from BMW, I bought it from a "normal" car sales!
I am tempted to go down the "cheaper" service route, but If I were buying a BMW, I'd want a full BMWSH!
The service is due in 1600 miles, so i have a little time to decide!

I called in my local National tyres today to clarify that they use the said oil and they confirmed it, showed me on their computer system.
They have to buy it in bulk, thats why its a lot cheaper than buying it yourself.
So booked it in for wednesday, although I then had to go and buy a 1lt bottle of oil because my oil top up light has started coming on when I switch engine off :( cant win em all.

Yes, they did castrol edge 5w 30 and i went for engine flush for the extra £5. As it was being watched i knew the flush went in :). The filter they use will be OEM but as im getting BMW service in a few months anyway for the log book i dont really care its not a BMW one right now

Hi,

My service indicator says I have 11,000 to my next service but the last stamp in the book was about Mar 09. I know these cars probably dont need oil changes as often as I was previously used too but I fancy doing a change for peace of mind sake before the next interval. I have only had the car a couple of months and bought it from a non BMW trader (reputable one though!)

If I have an oil change with these national tyres chaps now does it effect the service indicator? I intend to have the next full service (Inspection 2 I think) when it gets closer.

Do I need engine flush? (22K miles on a 2006 3.0 SI) or is that a bit unnecessary baring in mind the mileage.

Thanks in advance

If it were mine I'd do an interim oil change, get a stamp and mileage in your book, leave the serivce inmterval counter alone and then run it to its correct service.

I don't like flushing oils at oil and am sure somewhere I read BMW don't recommend them, but stand to be corrected.

Thanks,

Think I'll do that. Possibly driving down to Spain in a few weeks and would feel a little more re-assured if I know I've got some fresh oil in the car.

Checked the deal online and it really does seem to good to be true, but will give it a go.

Just to confirm the deal is legit I was running until recently a Vectra CDTI as a daily driver doing 40K+ per year. I do most of the mechanical stuff myself to save costs as even a std dealer service on something like the Vectra is £250+ National did the oil (Castrol Edge) and filter for just over £30, and actually went to the vauxhall dealer to get the filter. If I bought the oil and filter myself i would have been looking at £50, and they didn't try to sell me anything else, well recommended.
