Last year was £149, renewal is £236 - we have a staff benefits portal where i can get it for £88.15 but only for new customers.

So if i let my currently policy run out then a few days later take out the one for £88 as a new customer that's okay? To be honest I've done that a few times before but I'm not sure it feels right! I haven't ever needed to use it, my worry is they wont come out!

There's possibly a clause in the T&Cs that you need to have been a lapsed member for 3 months before you qualify for new member benefits - there normally is anyway.

The older/grumpier I've gotten the more I take the attitude "well if you sell it to me at that price and don't bother checking anything, then its on you", so I'd just do the same as you and take it out as a "new" member shortly after. Especially when they're bumping up the prices so ridiculously.

Seemingly there isn't! Not one that i ca find anyhow. AI suggests that if you do it online their system might flag up an issue and remove some of the discount but if you do it through an employee portal that takes different route into their system and that doesn't happen.
I just worry that even if they do let me buy it they'll find some way of not responding if i do need them...

I guarantee that if you call them and threaten to leave, they'll slash the price significantly. I used to do it regularly.

Don't be afraid to shop around though. If you Google "Compare the Market breakdown cover" you'll find many far cheaper options including the companies that the insurers use as bolt-ons.

I've been with RAC for years, and every renewal they jack the price up. I get a new member quote from the AA that is always cheaper and when I call the RAC they always manage to match, or beat, it.

I imagine the AA would do the same for an RAC quote.

Thing with the AA is that they will recover you after an accident, not all recovery services will do that (including the RAC).
I just really don’t like using the phone, its one of my things 😢

I use AutoAid it covers any vehicle I drive and includes the wife as well in any car, if its one of the Z's I have to pay a extra premium due to vehicles age but only in the event of a breakdown. Never had to use them but always found them very competitive on price and service offered.

I’ve just signed up on the work deal, home start, nation wide recovery, onward travel and me covered in any vehicle I’m travelling in. Recovery after an accident etc etc £119.

Many recovery companies will only take you to the nearest garage, the AA will take me from anywhere in the UK to my home address.

AutoAid does actually look quite good and includes all the above options.

I renewed my AA membership earlier this year and as others have posted they jacked my premium from £60 to £130. I said that I would get back to them as I still had over a week. Upon checking I could get much cheaper quotes and even the quote from The AA website was £80 for the same cover !

When the agent called back I explained the situation (and he confirmed that they are on commission so hence the inflated renewal amount), that I can get cover for £80 . He went silent for a minute and came back to confirm yes I am right BUT that was a special limited Offer last week and it has ended !

Long story short - quote reduced from £130 to £81,

As others have pointed out it includes recovery after accident...in fact The AA will refund you should the Police FORCE you to use 'their' recovery service, which is a rip off. I did check first with the AA when I was in this situation what should I do , and was told that the AA are fully aware of ' this practise' and that they will pay the costs, which they did :)
