Sound Generator Mod

Hello, I have a US spec 03 3.0i. I was wondering if anyone has done the sound generator mod where they remove the sponge closest to the firewall recently. I would like to do it but would like to have some guidance by those who have recently done it lol. Thanks in advance

Lots of threads on this. It's easier to remove the pipe from in the engine bay (some guides do it from the footwell - no idea why). It's very easy to remove - then there's a sponge at either end of the pipe. I've gone with half a sponge at the firewall end as taking both out is a bit... loud (but my DISA valves are buggered so that won't help) but it's down to personal taste.

To remove the pipe, follow the air intake right over to the firewall and you'll see the pipe attached by a jubilee clip. Undo, wiggle the pipe a bit as it's kinda lodged on at the bulkhead end and that's it. There'll be a sponge at each end.

In my opinion this is a better mod for early cars with the M54 engine (as is the OP’s), as the N52 can be a bit raucous when extended. Particularly in the coupe, where there is no way for the sound to escape, I wouldn’t recommend removing both bits of foam!

I have seen some videos, however I was wondering if it was possible to do from the inside. I know on the RHD z4’s it’s much easier since it’s on the passengers side (left side) but what about on a LHD like mine. I don’t want to fiddle with the old plastics in the engine bay.

Mine came without any foam in, I've added foam at the firewall end (from a kitchen sponge, looked about the right density). I reckon it's probably 1/2 to 2/3 of the original foam. Sounds good, doesn't blow my ears out with the roof up at 4500rpm.
