Completely new here and a BMW virgin.
Although I have actually worked on loads of BMW’s in the past specially on N52’s, N54’s, B48 and B58’s and I’ve always admired BMW’s 6 cylinder engines but never owned one.
Well now that’ll be changing I’ve just reserved an E85 3.0i (M54) with a manual transmission which hopefully will be picking up not this weekend but next weekend providing everything checks out on it.
It’s done 93k miles has had 3 owners and has a long MOT and loads of paperwork including an up to date service history with most of it being bmw and bmw specialists.
It’s had a whole host of things in the last 3/4 years such as o2 sensors, bilstein springs and shocks up front new control arms and drop links amounting to eye watering amounts over the last 5 years or so.

It genuinely looks very well taken care of is there
anything I need to look for specifically on these?

I’m aware the roof is one thing and this is working perfectly and it’s had the expansion tank done and I believe it also had an oil leak which has also been addressed there’s so much that’s been done over the last 5 years too much stuff to mention.
Thanks for any advice!

Welcome.
An M54 with 93k miles is just run in if the oil has been changed every decade or so.

Congratulations on your Z4 purchase and welcome to the forum.

If you are still working on those engines you could become very popular on here!

Many thanks everyone for the warm welcome.
As I said I haven’t got it yet but when it all checks out next weekend I’ll post a picture.
It’s a weird spec it looks to have the upgraded sound system, xenons, heated red leather seats, black paintwork but doesn’t have multi function steering wheel.

Reading about the M54 I know of them and I’ve done some research comparing the M54 and the N52 in the Si version and it seems really conflicting.
I love the Si but they’re just a little out of my budget the 3.0 M54 seems absolutely bullet proof which I love….
If someone could give me an honest comparison of the 2 that would be awesome.

A lot of them seem to have random spec probably because so many things were on the options list, including some features that were standard on a 3 Series! My first E85 had Individual Ruby Black Paint, Carver Stereo, Xenons and heated seats but also no MFSW.

I've only had an M54 in a 3 Series 325ti Compact so my nearest comparison would be the 325i Touring I replaced it with. The N52 in that seemed a bit smoother and definitely liked to rev higher, but did land me with a £500 bill when the electric water pump died at 135K miles. :(

Manual 3.0Si E85s are quite hard to find as less than 700 seem to have found their way to the UK, but the N52 seems equally bulletproof, albeit with the inevitability of the water pump dying at some point.
