From regular drive to manual— to sport then to sport plus mode questions

What your forgetting that even if the left shift and the sports option had the same effect (which it doesn't) left shift doesn't change throttle sensitivity / lag , steering weight and if you have adaptive dampers comfort damping..

What your forgetting
I forget nuthin’

Same argument. What kind of sport car enthusiast drives a N54 with DCT, pushes the onion button, but settles with an automatic gearbox? It’s poor engineering, and equally bad at understanding the market.

I can appreciate a separate button to fix the gearbox to manual to avoid repeated shifts on certain inclines. But that too can be solved with better engineering.

(I know, in the last 20 years I’ve been very critical of BMW choices.)

Ok I’m starting to get it figured out (I think) I don’t have interactive shocks which I’m happy with, so my only question now is what is the difference between sport 1 and 2 other than sport 2 shuts the traction control off?

Sports still has DTC which means there is still traction control but with relaxed stability control..ie the rear end will step out much more before it’s caught …some folks like that..others don’t

Ok, but what is the difference between 1 and 2? When I switch to 2 the traction stability light show off, is that the only difference?

OK from the top one more time..

  • The lever chooses who shifts. D: the car, economically. DS (push left): the car, aggressively. Paddles: you.
  • The switch chooses how it responds. NORMAL is soft everything. SPORT sharpens throttle, steering, shifts and dampers. SPORT+ is SPORT with the traction leash lengthened.
  • The DTC button is for slippery surfaces, full stop. It resets everything else to Comfort — it is a snow-and-gravel aid, not a performance mode.
  • There is only one sports shift program. DS and the SPORT switch both select it; the difference you feel between the two routes is the throttle map feeding it.
  • Fastest shifts (S+) exist only in manual mode with SPORT or SPORT+ selected.
  • Want slip and sharpness together? That is SPORT+, not the button.
  • DSC OFF: press and hold the DTC button about three seconds (a short press is only TRACTION). It can be used at speed, deliberately — but there is no net at all, and it also resets the maps to Comfort.
  • Not sure if you have adaptive dampers? Decode the VIN. The car will not tell you from the driver’s seat.
Master those six lines and you know more about the E89’s driving modes than most owners learn in a decade of ownership.
