Does anyone have a working MAF I could borrow

After a few years of resetting codes 2882 and 2883 on my 2005 2.5i and replacing various parts I finally got round to enlisting the help of my trustworthy garage. They did a deep scan but everything appeared to be within parameters and then carried out a smoke test but didn't find anything. They cleaned the maf and checked all pipes and connections on the inlet side and changed the air filter. They did suggest if I could get hold of a known working MAF that might be the next step.
This weekend I took the car out but drove very timidly. On a dual carriegeway I tried to go past a very slow moving lorry and immediately the car instrument panel lit up car coughed and spluttered and went into limp mode.
Code reader had the usual 2882 and 2883 but also a new one 28a2 for air path monitoring. I reset the codes and drove the 20 miles home very sedately but with no eml coming on.
I will be taking car back to garage but would like to eliminate maf in the first instance. Mechanic told me not to bother with the 30 quid ones on eBay as they are rubbish
I should add that I have previously run the car without maf connected but codes still appear although revs increased every time I touched the brake pedal
If anyone has a working MAF I will of course pay for the hire.
Any other ideas grately appreciated.

Which engine do you have? It will make a difference in the MAF you need.

If you are still after help. I can do an engine diagnostic for you. It will require you to set up OBD Fusion on your phone/tablet and run some data logs. Post the logs here and I will do the diagnostic for you. I do this all the time on the E46Fanatics forum.

There are 4 logs required:
- Cold start.
- Hot idle
- Steady 60 mph cruise
- Rev-Rise. This log checks the MAF.

The setting up of OBD Fusion is covered in the PDF attached to this thread: https://www.e46fanatics.com/threads/obd-fusion.1240733/

Thanks for the offer. A bit too complicated for me. The garage has carried out a full diagnostic and maf seemed ok but could be breaking down when very hot and engine under pressure. That's why they suggested I ask about borrowing one to test out. They phoned BMW contacts and a new maf works out at something over 300 pounds.
They are doing more tests for me later this week like fuel pressure at fuel rail and then it's clutching at straws and spending big money.

I have a 2.2i one. I'm pretty sure they are the same.
Can post it out if you think it would help?

That is brilliant, thanks enuff. Shall I message you with address for delivery. I will of course cover postage and a few beers. Thank you.

Yup, send me your details and I'll get it on it's way.
If it works you may as well keep it.

I sent you my details but my it skills are a bit limited. Did you receive the message. Thanks.
Hi Mike, saw your messages but didn’t realise you’d put this post up.
MAF is on its way to you. Parcelforce 48 Hour.
Hope it fixes it for you.
If it works we can sort out a settlement later. 👍🏻

Fitted it Saturday and noticed engine didn't hunt on cold start up. Made a few journeys and eml didn't come on. Hopeful but not really conclusive as it was a bit random but more regular recently. Will run it for next week or so and report back, fingers crossed

Hopeful then

Haven't done any lengthy journeys but eml not come on so very hopeful. I am probably tempting fate but you might need to consider how much you want for the unit after the weekend.

I sent a 3.0 version to @jasecasecarr a couple of days back for the same reason. We agreed £30 including postage. So I'd say the same for you if it proves to be working.

Shhh, @enuff_zed

I need to drive it for at least another 12 months with no EML before I’m prepared to admit it’s fixed! 😂

In all seriousness though, so far it’s looking really promising. The idle is much smoother, especially from cold, and it’s been running great with no engine light. I’m keeping everything crossed that this has finally cracked it.

Thanks again for sorting me out with it. 👍

Still finding it hard to believe maf was the culprit as last summer ran the car a few times with it disconnected and eml still came on although it didn't go into limp mode on acceleration.
Evidence however seems to suggest the MAF as it's now a few runs with no eml . Will do a write up at some stage to benefit others who might get diverted towards other scenarios . In the meantime cannot thank you enough Enuff ( no pun intended).
30 quid Inc postage seems very cheap. If you let me have payment details on a pm I will wing a bit more across to you . Thanks

Cheers Mike. Glad it's fixed it. I'll send the details to you now.
