Wireless charging phone mount

Hi all, so getting tired of the z having nowhere to really put my phone to charge it whilst driving and also wanted some further integration i looked into some options:

First option i looked at was changing the head unit for a more modern touch screen tablet type arrangement, like the joying tablet unit

https://www.joyingauto.eu/joying-10...oid-10-0-dsp-car-stereo-upgrade-4gb-64gb.html

major con for me was it was unclear whether all the existing controls would work, also no real idea of the overall quality and the look, also the more i looked at it the more i came to the conclusion that im not really that much of a fan of the modern tablet stuck on a dash look, this was still the best looking option of this style of single din head unit.

so i looked at options keeping the stock head unit, decided on the bluetooth cd changer replacement dongle that plugs into the cd changer plug, simple enough fit, also thought why not use my phone as nav etc, but i hate windscreen mounts and the vents in the z4 don't lend themselves to mounting there with charging etc so i thought in front of the ashtray seemed like a decent location.

bought one of these, magnetic mounting for the phone and wireless charging, only problem no decent way to mount it... half an hour or so on cad and to the 3d printer...

tried it, did the job, but didn't allow the ashtray to open fully...v2

allows the full opening of the astray this time with the changer/mount on

and a dash of primer

this is progress so far but its mounted just waiting for the wiring bits and usb cable to install it fully

This is the exact same dilemma I’m currently battling through, but with a solution that makes perfect sense (love the roundel detailing btw)
Following and I’d be interested in following suit.

fitted this back into the car today (not tested electrically) but looks alright to me!

Very cool. Look forward to seeing the final results.

Thanks, so the electrical bits turned up today,

soldered in the power supply to the back of the lighter as it seemed like a good solid source of power

secured the charging cable into the mount, cut a small hole into where the module sits in the ashtray assembly

all refitted with cable

charger fitted powered up and working, shown in this position tilted which as shown allows the ashtray to be fully opened

fitted the phone to the mount it just magnets on with a little sticker provided with the kit, i went to take a picture of this and realised i was on my own and also my phone happens to be my camera....so sadly no picture, however i am pretty pleased with how it looks! i will get a picture next time there is another camera available!

Excellent work.
Good to see the wiring too. I’ve bought myself a 12v-5v step down kit with piggy back fuse options and am looking at my spare ashtray. Specifically the insert to see if I can make a dock using that and a deconstructed usb c charger.

Thanks!

i looked at doing that too i also wanted to use my phone as a CarPlay type screen for nav which suits the landscape positioning better, also liked the idea of wireless charging not really messed with that before

Wireless charging is appealing I must say.

Was thinking today if there was a way of adding a magnetic mount behind the dash so you could charge through the material somehow. Literally get in the car, place phone on the dash in landscape or portrait and it starts charging in a totally hidden way.

This would be the ideal! just couldn't find a way to do it in the Z not enough flat surfaces inside!

managed to get a couple of photos with phone in situe

so far happy with it as a mod, keeps the phone charged enables me to have nav and control of podcasts etc and no plugging in or faffing with cradles!
