When i bought my E85, the steering wasn't working. I had the motor reconditioned, and when I replaced it it took a while to get the right "feel" with the meshing of the worm gear. To be fair I just wanted to drive it, so when it felt acceptable, I left it where it was.
However, for ages, I have noticed a knocking sensation through the steering wheel and audible rattle when going over slightly rough surfaces. I put it down to worn components, and just accepted it.
However, I have recently suspected that the meshing of the gear on the steering motor could be the culprit, so have adjusted it today.
Bingo! Its fixed it, and for the first time since i bought the car, it feels right! I didn't realise how bad it was before, now it feels much better to drive!
It took ages to get perfect, first it was too tight, so I kept adjusting it back slightly until it was just right. The steering centres perfectly, there is no knocking, and the now obvious free play that I had has totally gone!
I must have driven up and down the road 20 times to check it, at the end with a stupid grin on my face as i realised how good the steering on these can feel!
