From regular drive to manual— to sport then to sport plus mode questions

After 6 months acquiring car and (not driving many miles) I’m still learning and trying to figure out the transmission shift modes. So I understand the normal drive mode but then there is the manual mode where you slide the shifter over to manual and it does change shifting rpm points but it still shifts automatically or I can shift up or down? ( this is the one I like best) Is that how it’s supposed to work? Then there is the sport or sport plus mode and it changes rpm shifting points but I can’t tell a difference between the two? Which leads me to whether I have the interactive suspension or not? When does it kick in? When doing rear brake job I think there were some wires going to shocks, but not sure. Sorry as I know this may be a worn out subject, but I’m just not getting it?

You know, sharing the trim would help helpful idiots like me to help helpless folk like you. lol

Assuming it’s 35is … in reverse:

I could not tell the difference between the different AS maps. I found that for a M-badged car, the stock suspension was awful. So I first changed to H&R, which didn’t work, and later to KWV3. Tits!

If you leave the gear knob in D, it shifts all 7 gears for you. You can still override by actioning the +/- paddles. If you pull the knob to the left (for LHD folk), the transmission map changes to Auto Sport for more aggressive shifting. If you action the paddles, the transmission map changes to Manual, and now you have to shift up and down. (The transmission will automatically upshift when it redlines, and to first when you stop.)

The Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ button is for engine (and suspension and steering) maps. It should be self-explanatory.

You can combine the transmission and engine maps.

Are you near the Bay Area?

Yeah sorry, I have a 2009 30i. Sdrive When I pull shift lever to the left for manual mode it still shifts on its own but at different rpm shift points compared to regular drive. The sport and sport plus mode seems not much different except I think the suspension tightens up but I’m not sure and if I have the interactive shocks? So I am overall confused but like I said I do like the manual mode but it can still shifts itself. I need a step by step break down on the shifting modes and what changes with each.

Great - so you will have a standard auto 6 speed box (not a 7 speed DCT).

On a 2009 30i I don't believe you will have adaptive shocks, but you can find out 100% sure by entering your vin number into one of the online checkers, it will show you all options fitted / the exact spec you have (no more guesswork).

Find the online manual for your car (or check the glovebox) - full description there as to how the auto box changes modes / what you will see, or use an AI tool to break it down for you in great detail.

When pushed over the left, it will go into 'sport' mode for the gearbox, and shift automatically - that is until you then shift manually - either by pushing the gearstick fore/aft, or by using the steering wheel paddles. It will always downshift for you when coming to a stop/to prevent a 'stall', but will not upshift for you.

It will stay in manual mode then until you put it back into D, at which point it's back in auto.

So I guess I don’t have interactive which I like, just something else to go wrong and more expensive to replace———for me the comfort mode is only when in regular drive? Then when I slide shifter over it goes into sport 1 mode, but when I press my sport mode button it shows sport one and when I press it again it shows sport+ and traction control off. ——I think I’m getting it lol, except for what’s the difference between 1 and 2 other than traction control off?

So boys n girls here's the definitive table..

If you leave the shift lever in the standard position you get 3 different auto shift programs, if you push it across to the left then you get 3 overlapping but different programs.

The shift left lever overrides the stock programs.

Those programs are further modified by the dynamic driving switch.

So there are 4 different shift patterns depending on those selections.

Plus which may confuse folks independently throttle sensitivity.

So you can have a sports program shift with either slow comfort or faster sports mode throttle settings!Screenshot 2026-06-27 113716.png

Questions?!-:)

My ignorance and for me clear as mud. You say when you slide selector lever (shifter lever)to left it locks in place, for me when I slide it to the left I can manually shift up and down using the lever?? Kind of reminds of a sequential manual gear box shifter.

That’s why it’s called ‘DS’ in the table…🙈👀

‘drive’ ‘sequential shift’

When I press DTC once or go full DSC OFF, it looks like that selection takes over my prior Comfort/Sport/Sport+ setting, or at least stops mimicking it. Visually, the Comfort/Sport/Sport+ indication goes away and gets replaced by the TRACTION or DSC OFF indicator. But the car also doesn't behave like it would if I just had Sport or Sport+ enabled on its own. That contradicts the document, which makes them look fully independent.

Assuming this is the same for others with the DCT?

Doc shows if you press those buttons all settings go into comfort mode...they are NOT independent.. those modes are for sand/gravel/snow not as performance aids..

Chart applies to all torque converter / DCT models with minor variations and of course no a ter market remaps

I thank B21 for trying to clarify things, I think me and some of us need a flight instructor in the car to get shifting figured out. And thank you B21 for not addressing some of us as Boys and Girls lol. and sorry B21 my heritage is only 1/2 Scottish. The 1/2 side had the name Tannahill, they came to the U.S. on the boat in late 1800s

When I do advanced driver training for seniors I find almost all of them can’t even show me 2 gear box modes ..let alone 5 or 6..

Irrespective of driver vintage, it’s bloody daft. Whether you putz or push, only three maps are really needed: supermarket, adverse weather/surface, spirited. Everything else is poor engineering. (Never assign an engineer to do a mathematician’s job. :poke: )

Funny, I don’t remember ever pressing that button. My two maps are either stock or Sport+. What am I missing?
Only time i ever saw folks use it ended up in the wrong lane or on a sidewalk after carmeets. Sport + and manual shifting is all i need.
