Z3 to Z4 to Z4 to Z8

I didn't 'question' anything. The OP can do what he likes. I would hope he wouldn't be swayed by my opinion. It's a forum....opinions and chat are what make it.......in my opinion.
Fair point, you didn't actually question it. We all like different things. Like I said, a Z8 isn't my cup of tea particularly, regardless of price... but if the OP is set on a Z8, then thats fair enough.

As my old mother would say 'there ain't no pockets in shrouds!' spend it and enjoy it.... and some pictures of it when you get it

Good luck with the viewing/s please keep us posted. You've now got me searching eBay for Z8 books and bits.
I see what you mean ££££!

Have you enquired with bmw if the book can be re ordered?

What a great opportunity CliveN. Get the one that you want - its your car and go have fun. I drove a Z8 ~15 years ago when my friend (a local BMW GM), had one that was traded in at his store and brought it around for me to drive. He was great - told me he had to put new tires on it anyway, so. "treat it like a rental car'" I did and did a few burnouts - in know sacrilege, but oh what fun! It was a really fun car to drive and quite quick. It is was fueled my desire for the 6MT Z4 that I just recently bought.

Have you looked in Germany? There seem to be a fair few there with various specs and as they are all LHD why pay over the odds over here for one.

I absolutely love them. Would be an Alpina for me they look so good. Silver on red.

The downside is value for money and as far as i have read the actual driving experience is not the best.

Life is too short but the boat has sailed with these. So many better cars out there for this sort of money. If they were 100k i would be like just buy one but the difference as you say is not huge and they still arent great.

I guess it depends if Clive can keep it registered in Spain, or if it has to be UK registered - which will now incur VAT/taxes thanks to the ever-giving gift of Brexit.

Could still work out if the price is right though

In response, vfm? Nah not really. You need to want one. Alpina wheels - I will buy these anyway if I don’t buy the Sytner one with ACS wheels. For me preference is a U.K. car not a US import. The car will continue to be U.K. registered. It will not live in Spain. It would be an in-out car. It’s not worth importing from Europe. They require mods and usually they are even more expensive by around 10% like for like.

I am astounded and rather chuffed by the replies. Thanks guys. Okay I suspected I might get a few brickbats about spending £200k on a car let alone a z8. As most people might realise, you can get a nice Series 1 E type 4.2 AND a McLaren 570s for the same money. But one is old and one is often a money pit.

So a Z8 it is. Always wanted one, will now get one. Truth be told, it’s viable as I have the money and it seems likely that I will inherit a lot at some time in the future. My thinking is do it now as I could pop my clogs earlier - my mother is a tough old bird! But if I don’t I could sell the car anyway.

I am lucky (or not) to have two super low mileage garage queens and I REALLY don’t want another. So the intention here is to have a really nice example but which is usable. And for this reason, and while I will view them, the Ā£200k plus cars with everything will probably not be bought. There are two currently in the U.K. and both have the book (good) but are US imports (less good). But they are silver/red my least favourite colour combo - but it’s less garish in real life. And SWMBO loves it sadly.

Another car has 70000 miles, is a U.K. car and while I have still to be given a video of the soft top up and the underside, it seems clean. It’s silver/black - more appealing to me. And is very usable. It’s one owner.

The last current contender is 17000 miles and UK and silver/red. All great but as I’ve said before lacking in all of the stuff you get with a a Z8 (hard top, lots of paperwork (there’s enough), tool kit, etc). Another good thing is it’s been used every year. Most Z8 sit in a warehouse.

It’s a toss up between these two. What I would really like is a topaz blue/cream example with all of thff etc stuff and say 30009 mikes fit Ā£180k but thin on the ground.

Final bit of factoid stuff on these cars. ā€œThe bookā€. Each car came with its own big hard back book showing its chassis plate coming off the line in Dingolfing. These are routinely missing and cost up to Ā£3500 to buy on EBay - for a book!! Second, z8 interiors don’t last well as owners had them because the just had to, not because they were enthusiasts. Luckily you can still buy everything if you have enough cash. On the other side of the coin, undersides are usually very clean as it’s all aluminium other than the bolts and steering arms.

Finally, the aim is to use this car to go down to Spain every year so 2000 left hand drive miles a year. And while I so so so want a hard top (as it looks nice) the reality is that is sits in a corner in the garage on its stand….. so that’s why I can consider the 17000 miles car if I am being pragmatic. But I still WANT ONE.

Today I will find out if the 70000 miles car passes muster. BTW I have now looked at 10 of these things…..
Excellent! Buy the one you want, once your spending a decent amount of money on anything, cars, houses etc another 30k makes no difference. I'd get a low miler and drive to Spain as many times as you can, enjoy the heck out of it. As they appreciate that will offset the mileage and you know, so what if you loose 50k, I've lost so much money buying 'sensible' new cars over the years I just buy the ones I want now and feck it šŸ‘

Yes if you have the money (not many do accepted) and you get to a certain age then priorities change. I think I could afford to lose Ā£30000 or so not lease because over my time I have probably broken even or car and bike sales over 40 years - mainly due to one massive sale and two bankers in the garage (which will when I sell them). Nearing a choice now as well. But it’s not easy for a 25 year old car. There is no perfect car on sale at the moment at any price. Either import (people want UK cars, too high miles, too low miles, holed roof (roofs NLA), crappy underneath, etc etc.
