Hi everyone,

We are looking to sell our 2013 BMW Z4 E89 hard-top roadster as spares or repair.

It is red with cream leather seats, has approximately 141,000 miles, and comes with 2 keys. One key is currently working/used regularly; the second key has not been used for a while, so we cannot fully confirm its condition.

The car does run and drive, but it has an orange engine management light and there is a noticeable shake/rough running. Because of this, we are selling it honestly as spares or repair rather than as a fault-free car.

AA diagnostics showed the following fault codes:

  • 2D61 – Outlet camshaft timing control / position not reached
VANOS / camshaft timing related fault
  • 2C58 – Boost pressure control / pressure build-up incorrect
  • 31E9 – Electrical fan / open circuit
  • 31E8 – Electrical fan / short circuit to earth

AA also noted suspected DME-related fan issue, with the fan defaulting to on. Engine oil level and coolant level were both OK at the time of the AA visit.

A BMW specialist has advised that the issue may be timing/VANOS related, but we have not authorised major repair work, so the car is being sold with the faults declared.

Important points:
  • 2013 BMW Z4 E89 hard-top roadster
  • Red exterior
  • Cream leather interior
  • Approx. 141,000 miles
  • 2 keys
  • Running, but engine light on and rough/shaking
  • AA diagnostic fault codes available
  • Sold strictly as spares or repair
  • Buyer to inspect/recover
  • No warranty implied or given
  • MOT is to be renewed by us

The logbook/V5C situation is not straightforward at the moment, so this will need to be discussed honestly with any serious buyer before sale. We want everything done properly and transparently.

We have had a £2000 offer from a scrap company, but before accepting that we wanted to offer it to Z4 enthusiasts first, as it may be useful to someone who knows these cars or wants it for repair/parts. W are looking for sensible offers.

Please message me if interested, and I can send any further details.

I would suspect then that the issue could possibly be the notorious N20 timing chain tensioner: either breaking up and clogging oilways, or more likely allowing the timing to jump a tooth or more.

Thank you, that’s really helpful. That does sound possible based on the AA codes and the rough running. We haven’t authorised any major strip-down or repair work, so we can’t confirm whether it is VANOS solenoid related, timing chain/tensioner, or something deeper.

For that reason we’re selling it honestly as spares or repair, with the AA diagnostic codes declared, rather than trying to repair it blindly. Appreciate the insight.

Nope, individual.
OK. It was just the 'we' multiple times that made me wonder.

BTW forum rules are that you need to state a price, or the ad could be removed by the fearsome moderators.

Problem I see with a car like this is that it sounds like the engine repair (whatever it is) is likely to be expensive; £2,000 ish if a timing chain issue.
The engine has done 141k. Is it worth spending good money on an N20 with that kind of mileage?

No, IMO. So it is realistically a breaker. Others will, no doubt, have other ideas.

We should crowd fund an s65 engine swap - and all have it on a time share!

OP I’m not going in on your advert at all- but I concur with @Pondy assessment that it’s probably chain jump- so that’s a new engine

Cheapest I’ve found a replacement engine for in the past is £3k and a rebuild is similar

So at 140k miles in a rare ish colour, light interior and a few extras it’s a breaker

If someone has offered you £2k snap their hand off. I’d offer £500 as a breaker car

Sorry- not what you want to hear but that would be my view

Oh sorry, it’s my partner’s, that’s why I didn’t want the claim the car.

Oh no I want to hear all honest answers! Thank you for your honesty. If you ask me I wouldn’t give a penny to any BMW on earth but she loves them so here I am dealing with it 😂
