Ford VS Audi. A direct comparison on build quality

I was cleaning both cars yesterday and was thinking.......
We have an Audi A4 avant registered in November 2024 which we have had since new
We also have a Ford Focus ST registered in December 2024 which we have also had since new
Strangely enough they were both very similar RRP when new. Around £42k (a lot for a Focus I know).
Within 500 miles, they have both done the same mileage and done the same journeys, as my wife uses them alternately to commute.
Both are cleaned usually at the same time, so the same frequency.
As I was cleaning them I thought of the above, so I compared various things on the two cars to see whether the perceived Audi quality really was true compared to a low-rent Ford.

Paintwork.
The Audi definitely has better quality (thicker) paint. The odd stonechip on each proves this, as the Ford's are much larger and go down to the metal.

Plastic mouldings.
The rear bumper/ valance on the Ford is very flimsy and wobbles around when cleaning. The Audi's is as solid as a rock.

Wheels.
Both have black painted alloys, althought the Ford's are forged 10 spoke and the Audi's are 5 spoke with a diamond cut face. Brake dust has already ingrained into the Ford's front wheels and has started to pit them. The Audi wheels have none of this, with brake dust cleaning off easily with no marking. This could be down to other factors like different types of pads and the Ford does have HUGE Brembo calipers on the front. But I am going with a cheaper paint finish.

Interior mats.
The Ford's driver's side floor mat is wearing through already. It almost has a hole where the right heel sits. The Audi's are all still perfect.

The Ford needs an oil change every 12 months; the Audi every 2 years. Servicing prices are not a lot different, so the Audi is cheaper to run.

So it looks as though Audis are indeed made much better than a Ford of the same age, with higher quality materials.

However.........the Audi's 2 litre turbo 4 cylinder engine has used over a litre of oil in 10,000 miles. The ford's 2.3 litre turbo 4 cylinder (with 80 more BHP) hasn't used a drop in the same mileage.

My experience of Ford (1990s Escorts, 2004 Fiesta, Jag S and X-Types, 2008 Transit) has been that they do as little as they possibly can get away with.

* You can probably measure the underbody protection with a paint thickness gauge.

* Fasteners have the least amount of plating so they start corroding fairly early on.

* Design is all about assembly and manufacture rather than maintenance, so one shot push-fit together where others would use a fastener or a clip that doesn't break when you try and take it apart

* Electronics are only ever "that'll do". They do the job but have peculiarities that give a "they obviously never used this for any length of time."

The Jag had an interior light delay that was obviously designed with a latching switch in mind. The press-on, press-off switch that they then paired it with meant that, with the door open, you couldn't tell whether the interior light was on timed delay or just permanently on allowing you to shut the door and flatten the battery (where BMW notice that you've closed the door and then turns the light off no matter what.)

The Transit had the Bluetooth module tied to the radio including the power. Turn the radio off and you couldn't receive hands free calls even though you're still driving.

Ex-wife's 97 Escort - I had a spare Kenwood head unit I bunged in just so she could go from tape to CD and I couldn't believe the difference in sound quality it made. I'd always thought the system had a bit of an odd frequency response that I'd put down to crap speakers but the standard 6000RDS unit must have had some sort of internal equaliser that had been carefully "tuned" to the car by a tone-deaf intern as the Kenwood with a flat response was miles better.

Do Focus door seals still hang off after a year or so?

I have a 2012 Audi that still looks new inside and out. The electrics are a different story...

Interesting to note. Which is the most fun to drive?
The Focus by miles. The Audi is typical German 'efficiency'. It is a strange car, as it is an S-Line and 'black edition' with all the sporty looks (and it does look quite nice TBF), but it is probably THE most boring car to drive ever.

The Focus is a petrol ST with a 'track pack', so has huge Brembo brakes, adjustable KW suspension, forged wheels, etc. It is a complete nutter to drive. As an entertaining car, I would put it above the FK8 Type R Civic I had a while ago. The extra cubes help, as it has big torque for a 4 pot (420nm) which makes it feel quicker than it is. And it is pretty quick. Probably the last 'proper old fashioned' hot hatch. They won't make them again.

The Audi has manually adjustable seats, a crap stereo and not a lot of 'toys'. Everything was a cost option (it is German), so came with very little.

On the other hand the Focus has EVERYTHING as standard. Fully electric seats, heated steering wheel, clever matrix headlights, comfort access, mobile charging pad, a superb Bose stereo with about 100 speakers and a huge sub in the boot, etc, etc.

So in effect you get better quality in the Audi but more goodies in the Ford for similar money.

I'd take the Ford just for the performance and fun factor!

I didn't mention that the super high-tech (MHEV nonsense) in the Audi is crap. It cuts the engine during 'coasting' to save fuel. It is the worse fuel consumption petrol car I've had for years. Can't get more than 40mpg average, ever, even doing 60mph on the motorway all day. I could get more than that in a 360bhp B58, 2 tonne F33!

Oh and it has a problem with the brakes too. I am convinced it is associated with the MHEV stuff, but of course the dealer can find nothing wrong.

The Ford has none of the above shite.....OK it likes a drink but it's a 280bhp 4 pot which likes to rev.....but the brakes are epic and it doesn't have an additional battery just for fun.

Don’t those 2.3 lumps go pop or have lots of issues?
You should try the b58 in something a lot lighter, G29 Zed or F2x.

And the Case for the defence rests your Honour. :driving: 👍
