Having never fitted anything more difficult than an oil filter to a vehicle with modern electrics I have a real newbie question.

If I fit a non oe part, say camshaft sensor, do I need to explain to the ECU what it is or is it just plug and play.

Please be gentle with me

Your fine with replacing sensors like Cam and Crankshaft sensors, wheel speed sensors, Oil level sensors, oil pressure and coolant sensors, all plug and play.
You run into the coding requirement for Airbag modules, Lighting Control Module and the instrument Pod also the EWS module for its security functions to allow the car to be started.. These modules require specific coding to your car as they contain data like the Vin number and the vehicles mileage which modules use to confirm who they are communicating with. The GM5 module that control windows and other body functions is however plug and play although the replacement may not have been set to certain options that your old unit had. If that is the case then options can be selected using NCS Expert software and NCS Dummy which can enable and disable options for this module.

Because I’m pedantic….. there are two types of GM5, 5RD and Star 12 Low. Neither require coding other than for specific functions as @colb says, but they are not interchangeable.
