How to make the manual gearbox shifting feel tighter?

So recently I drove a 997 911 with a GT3... something in the gearbox. Maybe a short shifter?
But it felt magical - it felt tight, direct, even metallic.

When I sat down I felt my shifter being... rubbery? Very unsatisfying.

Maybe something is worn out.
Or maybe I need ... a short shifter maybe?
But I don't mind long stick travel, that's fine. I'm looking for tighter feeling mechanism.

Any ideas what to change/mod?

Don't know, maybe try with weighted M sport knob. But go for original one, there are copies everywhere.

Makes shifting more direct, but still, you have to wait for next gear. I don't feel that my 5 speed on 2.2 is the one that should be rushed like on fast and furious movie.

Maybe your's is the same as all the others, or maybe it's down to worn components (gearbox, clutch, release bearing, syncros)?

Although it could simply be down to the amount of time & money BMW spent on their gearbox for a bog-standard £30k road-going Z4 (5-speed Getrag) vs how much time & money Porsche spent on the gearbox for their £100k 'track' car?

Second hand the 6-speed BMW one can be had for less than £400, the 5-speed for less than £200, and the Porsche one for around £15k.

As said, some of it could just be design. Some of it could be worn bushes etc.

Part 12 here can be responsible for a lot of play (you'll need to check it's the same part number for your engine/gearbox), but you could get these replaced if you wanted.

I did it on my e30, and it made a massive, massive difference to the tightness of the shift. I have the parts waiting to fit to my e86, too
