Rust by the door latch pannels

Hello everyone, I've recently acquired a 05 plate 2.2 130k, 2 owner she's been sat a few months what looks like under some kind of vegetation lol.
The usual drain and run off points were cloggy with muck. Roof was camouflage haha. Cleaned them & drain plugs out ect. Then i noticed then a rust spot right where the panels join by the door latch drivers side.
Ive pushed back with my finger also scrubbed with a wire brush to take it back to the hardest stuff.
Upon closer looking its starting to corrode.
My question is do I attempt to fix this somehow without welding.
Is it likely to fail on mot for structural.
Has anyone fixed this before.
Advice.

Thanks guys 😊

If it helps, that panel bolts off, and this is what is underneath. I'd probably remove the rear quarter to assess what is underneath, and go from there.

You might find with better access you can grind it down to solid metal without making a hole

Hi trigger thanks for replying bud 😊 yes that quarter will be comming of for a repair also. So I can access there with the skirt off for a through look and prod about. Ill take it to the bone alright lol. Did you repair yours. Was it as bad or worse than mine. Thanks mate

No worries - sometimes just seeing what lies underneath can be useful for knowing how hard/easy a repair will be

Mine was just removed for preventative waxing etc behind everything, so I didn't need to do much to mine, just some surface scabs by the little bracket in the photo.

Looking at your photo, it doesn't look too bad (on the surface!), so hopefully a wire wheel will be all it needs, rather than any welding 🤞🏻

Little update on this, its salvageable indeed which is a massive plus. As I did think this was right though and guna leave a big hole both on the z and wallet to fix as ive no welding equipment, and its not on the mot fail sheet where it was originally motd at.

Today we left the quarter on still as I could get the skirt unclipped and my hands in (just) to hack away and then dremel the rest through. (panicking here incase pop it went in) it did on two small areas. Ive sanded back as best I can for the imperfections and lumps left, there's a few. Ill sand and prime it till the quarter comes off as part of the next job (be within the month) and then reclip for now. Car is off road as per mot, I baught it as a failure.

All in all fantastic news 🙌 we crack on 😊

Good result that! Well done for tackling it, too!

When you are ready to treat it for the final time, I've had great results with Bilt Hamber stuff - their Hydrate 80 rust converter (useful if there's pitted/not perfectly clean metal), and Eletrox zinc primer for clean metal with no rust left

Anyway - great outcome so far! Keep up the good progress 😁
