How long is a long drive?

As discussed part of the issue is where you drive and the purpose..up in Scotland outside of the Central Belt and assuming the tourists are not trying to commit suicide its all pretty low stress / great scenery / empty roads..I have to drive to North Yorkshire regularly and the levels of angst /aggression / congestion means a similar time / distance is not enjoyable and very tiring!

A long drive for me is probably anything over 2hrs, irrespective of distance. Would much rather do a longer 2hr journey than a short one!

I did the Spanish border to Calais in one day in my old 350z. That was probably the longest journey in a single day that I’ve done. I think it was 750 miles

I once drove from Elgin to nearly destination in mid Cornwall without stopping. 630 miles, the only reason I stopped was running out of fuel. That was a long stretch.

I still drive every other weekend from Oxford to mid Cornwall and back (245 miles each way, about 4 hours) and consider that just a normal drive, I still find driving relatively unstressful (despite the number of chompers on the roads).

Scotland is starting to feel like a long drive as I get older. I'm back to Skye to climb a few more mountains in a few weeks. I try to get up there a couple of times a year. A few years ago there was no such thing as a long drive. I enjoy it too much. These days I would say over 500 miles in a day.

A couple of hours driving is nothing. Takes me longer than that to get to and from many of my regular favorite walking spots on the SW moors. Guess it helps that the roads are mostly minor twisty and traffic free. If you know which ones to take. :driving:

An hour each way for a commute is my limit. Ended up in my late 40s often going 1.5 hrs each way to places and, on top of a solid, physical 8hr day I'd end up pulling in at services when nearly home and zonk out for 20 mins.

Nowadays I work at the bottom of the village and occasionally think going into town 5 miles away is excessively time consuming!

Coventry to Kirkcaldy and back in a day. 4am start, 8pm finish.
Went up in a Tiguan, came back with my s-max.

Commuting is a different thing all together. In my early 30's I used to cummute up from Gosport to Gatwick every day. 2hours each way in traffic on top of work was a long day and why I jumped at the chance of moving to the SW when it came up.

It's getting shorter as I get older, but I'll still do a 3-4 hour drive without thinking about it too much. Over that isn't so difficult, but I much prefer getting away from traffic for it.

Managed 900 miles in a day last summer in the Z4, Shropshire up to Perth for 9am for a run, then back to Shropshire same day. Something like 22 hours door to door, and I could've done with it being about 3 hours shorter. Daughter can't drive (yet…) but with plenty of food & leg stretch breaks we made it.

I did a longer one day drive in my 1 Series back in 2010. It was 615 miles from Salignac Evigues (France) back to Binfield in Berkshire, including the Channel Tunnel, but it was much less tiring than 400+ in the UK!

When I drove down from Cornwall to Chamonix. I was ready to drop when I got there. Used the French motorways. On the Return leg I used the A & B roads. Far nicer drive and less tired. It's not the miles or the time required. Just needs to be interesting.

As a truck driver, I regularly cover up to 1000 miles a week around Devon, Somerset and Dorset, but I'm getting paid for doing something I love, so it's all good! Plus, I get to listen to music all day, and the view from my "office" is amazing!

I'd rather be doing it in my Z4, though!

Longest road trip was B'ham to Morocco with a month hooning around in the desert etc in
my slightly tweeked classic Range Rover with a tuned 4.6 v8 in it, the fuel bill was rather painfull but great memories

If the drive is long enough to need a loo break it's a long drive. Think the longest single stint was from Plymouth to North Wales where I made it about 270 miles without feeling the need to stop.

A few years ago I drove from Paisley, near Glasgow airport to Cardiff nonstop to buy a car. Didnt buy the car but then drove to derby to view another then drove back home. No idea on mileage but was a long day at around 17 hours.

I think if your drives to long you're on the wrong roads.
I often go to North Wales for a day, by motorcycle mostly, but the journey finishes at Knocking, its pure fun after that point

We are so fortunate that there are no motorways in the SW of england. Not great for the local economy, but great for keeping the local roads free of traffic on all but a few days a year.

When I lived in Devon, the summer traffic was awful! You must remote enough that relatively fewer tourists are prepared to drive the extra miles on A and B roads.

I’ve done Massachusetts to Ohio quite a lot, about 850 miles in 13.5 hours. Used to do Ohio to Florida in one day, exactly 1,000 miles and 18 hours. Not in the z4 of course
