Steering Problems

What are the other options? When I looked I could not find anything other than ECU testing and Western Power Steering for a reconditioned rack. I did see on Autodoc ZF and Bosch listing a reconditined rack but they are not available anywhere.

Today the dashboard started bonging with EPS failure notice. Car is booked to go back Monday to check the coding again.

ECU Testing I already tried but they said my unit was beyond repair, the others I did not know about. Somehow I did not think to check on eBay, although one has to question how they are doing it that cheap considering the cost of this rack from BMW. Anyway too late now, I wish I was informed about this ealier 😕. But never mind, I just hope the garage can sort out the coding correctly on Monday!

So the car's been stuck with the garage to try and redo the coding but no luck, it seems the rack supplied by Western is defective! The garage has checked the car according to Western's requirements i.e. correct voltage coming to the EPS module good earth and the CAN Hi and Low giving a proper signal which are all fine. So this means a defective EPS module on this rack. Now waiting to see what solution Western will give! Same issue as my original rack!

You say it's the same issue as your original rack, I am no expert but surely that means something else is at fault or the garage doesn't know what it is doing.

Not sure if you have read what I have written at the start, the motor and EPS module from the original rack was sent to ECU testing to refurb howerver they could not do it saying it was beyond repair, they did say though from their testing the symptoms I had reported were consistent with the faults they found with that unit.

Since that unit couldn't be repaired, I purchased this rack which is a reconditioned unit both mechanically and electronically. The garage has already checked the Canbus feeds, voltage and earthing to the EPS module and these are all correct, so they have concluded that it must be this EPS module that is defective. Diagnostics shows the EPS module will not communicate.

What you are saying maybe correct, but what else apart from what has already been checked could cause this fault? Equally it could be that the EPS module on this rack has not been reconditioned correctly.

My friends 30i rack was fixed with £260 rack and 5 hours labour at £70 an hour…down from an initial quote of £2,500…kerching..

I sourced the rack from an EPS refurbisher

That is a result! It's pretty amazing that you can get these racks refurbished for that money when you consider what BMW charge for what is still just a reconditioned rack. Shame i didn't know about this before, where did you source the rack from? I am currently waiting for Western to send a replacement.

Just have a look at the comment in the parts catalog:
"Important!
Repair enabling codes are
automatically requested in the
programming routine. Alternatively, the
enabling codes can be requested directly
in the ASAP portal under 'Sweeping
Technologies' in the menu
'Request repair enabling codes'.
ATTENTION!
Screws and nuts must be replaced."

I don't know if this is required even after a mechanically replacement.

Quite some time ago i thought i saw someone on YT do a hydraulic conversion.
Think they used E85 rack and pump.
Always hated the steering on these cars.
