Cordless impact wrench recommendations…

Evening all, have a birthday coming up and getting a bit tool old for pi55ing around with breaker bars these days…. So considering a battery powered impact wrench.

Needs to have enough power to cope with wheels nuts, knuckle joint bolts, rear lower shock bolts etc.

And recommendations?

I’m only really thinking about un-doing tough bolts, I’d be doing everything back up with a manual torque wrench :thumbsup:
 
I got one of these. A bit pricey, but powerful and can get in some tight spaces.

Look on machine mart. They do a full range of impact drivers at sensible prices.

The cordless drill type of impact driver are designed for woodscrews, really.

I went for a 650nm mains one, but you do have to hang on tight otherwise it will break your wrist, or do a 'Grommit' and the drill stays still and you spin round! It's a beastie but will undo anything!

Impact designed sockets are sensible too, as normal vanadium ones can shatter with the 'percussion' effect. :thumbsup:

£209 including 2 batteries a charger and a case, doesn’t seem too bad.

Powerful enough to undo knuckle bolts to replace front struts etc?
 
I’d also recommend Milwaukee but the 18v compact impact driver, maybe a bit OTT for DIY but I don’t think you’d want for anything with this.

I definitely want a battery powered one, but good tip re the impact sockets :thumbsup:

That looks good too, possibly not as versatile for small spaces as the one Zedebee recommended, but a bit more powerful.

It’s chunky (shown here with 1/2” torque wrench for comparison), but the right angled format does allow you to get into spaces that many other battery powered impact wrenches can’t reach. 300 nm = 221 lb ft, enough to shake all the rust off your king pins, and changing wheels is a doddle. There are some stuck bolts that nothing will shift, but this beast certainly helps.

Yep, that 300 nm is the very useful one. It made small work of my Mc Zed rusted bolts :lol:
 
I’m just toying with getting a bare dewalt impact wrench mainly because I already have their drill with 2 x 5ah 18v batteries.
I think I should get a hog ring version rather than detent pin, is that correct?
Looks like they do a 400, 800, 950 and nearly 2000nm!
For wheels but also future rear subframe removal and tough old bolts.

I went for the Dewalt DCF900N-XJ - the biggest I could get. It's a beast, but trying to hold it/aim it with a length of extensions when you're lying on the ground under the car can be a pain, due to its weight.

It undid the subframe bolts, and everything attached it to like it was nothing. It undid the hub nuts in a couple of seconds too without even needing to counter the driveshaft (one it was removed from the car).

I paired mine with a 9AH(?) FlexVolt battery (~£90), as my 4AH batteries don't have a high enough discharge rate to delivery the full power (I absolutely hate battery tools. Just give me a cable - now we have to buy different batteries for different tools, and they'll just fail in a few years!). It will work with the 4AH batteries, but not at it's best. Check out this video - it's a different model, but shows the impact of batteries:



Defo go for hogring.
