Sooner we kill off all the idiots the safer the world will be.
Be careful what you wish for! The world would be a very empty place....and I'm not ready to go just yet (don't know about yourself).
I shall be here wondering why there is no one left to tell that I told you so

I do worry that the poorly run track days will end up putting an end, or much more restrictions, on track days.

They can't keep letting so many cars on the track at once with so many poor drivers and cars not up to a good enough standard. It has been an issue at Castle Combe as far back as I remember.

I'm surprised we haven't had more serious injuries.

I was watching the Z4 go onto the barrier. I called it the second he come up avon rise, totally predictable.

I passenger out in the action days a lot, its a right laugh! I took many of my cars out over the years, you got to learn somewhere and it is a cheap place to start. I wouldn't be using any of my cars out they're now mind, hell no!!

Without a shadow of a doubt a bad driver that shouldn’t be allowed on the roads. If you don’t know how to push up to the limits you should not be driving.
Seriously?
If that was the case there would be no traffic jams, ever. There would be no-one on the roads except experienced racing drivers (oh and you, obviously).
I may be wrong, but I don't remember lessons on 'how to push up to the limits' on the DOT driving test. it was a long time ago, mind.

Oops. Didn’t realise it was you and your car. :D

It wasn't.
I am a male. Therefore, by default, I am the best driver on the road bar none. It's all the others that can't drive; I am a driving God!

I've also watched many episodes of Top Gear, so am an expert in understeer, oversteer, entry speeds, balancing the rear end on the loud pedal, etc. You name it, I can do it. Never actually tried, but I'm sure I could. :D

just watched the video and.... oh dear. thats an expensive mistake he hopefully won't be making again.

having never done a Castle Combe Action day... is there any kind of briefing?

they should edit together a 2 minute video of the most spectacular crashes and show it to everyone before they go out - i do wonder if many of the crashes are from being ignorant of crashing, and what might happen if you get it wrong.

There was at the last one I did...and most people still went out and drove like they stole it. There was even a second briefing after lunch to remind people.

IIRC there was even an Adrian Flux or Greenlight insurance booth where you could buy insurance on a per session basis...was about £30 I think.

Yes, they advise you on the non over taking zones, advise on cones that mark turn in for apex / braking etc...

Heavily advise its a short track session, not a race etc...

I find that most fools out there are very young, inexperienced and driving a poorly setup car. The amount of times you see someone stack their mums Panda on budgets is enough to remind you to be wary.

The issues with castle combe action days are that they are open trsck slots during a car show. So baz and gaz from South West cruisers can settle that beef they had on the forum the preceding year over who's whip is fastest.

Jokes aside the issue is a heady combination of:

1. Cheap track slots at a car show where people who have never tracked before think 'yeah I'll give it a go for 35quid'
2. A wild mix of abilities from seasoned trackday go-era to complete novices
3. Properly sorted track cars on semislicks sharing tracks pace with barely legal road cars certainly not prepared for track
4. Lots of spectators for whom to be the hero
5. Too many cars on track at once. Like wayyy too many

It's a fucking disaster waiting to happen every time. I did one about 10y ago in my old megane r26, I vividly recall heading out of quarry three abreast being overtaken by a track prepped ford puma on one side as overtook a completely stock citron AX 1.1. The relative closing speeds alone of those three cars make it far more challenging than a normal trackday.

I've done a few car trackdays and a LOT of bike ones. Those "Action Days" look like chaos and not something I'd entertain.

I've done a Llandow semi private day organised by the Maserati club, and a group of us hire Cadwell for a couple of days each year for bikes. This year was the 29th. That does cost a little more than Llandow though :)

Just to expand on my previous point, I would strongly discourage anyone from concluding that a proper trackday is in any way like the track slots on an action day. The ONLY similarity is that they both take place on a track.

A proper trackday is a perfectly safe place to enjoy developing your driving skills in a way you simply can't on the road, and I'd similarly encourage anyone thinking about it to go for it, book on with a well known tdo, prep your car properly, take advantage of the (often complementary) instruction, and have fun! It's a cracking experience and jolly addictive!

First time I did a track slot was on an action day, honestly I came away so disenchanted with 'track driving' that u nearly sold my car and left it there. Thankfully I didn't (though not for my wallet!), did a properly organised day at goodwood a year later and the rest is history

This without a shadow of a doubt. Spectators all around the track (probably including friends and family) and lots of ego's is never going to end well. I imagine a lot of the mindset is more like a race than actually just driving the track.

Proper trackdays there won't be barely anyone watching round the track if at all and no one there really cares how fast or slow anyone else is, basically there's no pressure to drive out of your depth or show off.

Pretty sure someone (male driver and female passenger?) was seriously injured last year on one of these days, might have been the year before, made local news anyway. Everyone signs a waiver though so, on your head be it I guess!

Yes, I was a few cars behind that crash that day. Some young lunatic in a BMW. It was pretty horrific to be honest. Video of the barrel roll is obviously on YouTube.
